This is Gong Lijiao, the Chinese gold medal winner in the women's shot put.

I'm not buying that's a woman....
Wrong pic. That’s Kim Jong-un.

What makes you look foolish is all the experts that say it's a real phenomenon. What reason would she have for faking it and missing the entire Olympics she's spent the last 4 years training for? She's the best gymnast in the world. Hands down. When healthy, she does things no other gymnast can. If she were currently capable, do you honestly think she'd throw it all away. It's not like she's never performed on this stage. She has. She won the gold in the all around in 2016. And when completely healthy, she's an even better gymnast now than she was then.
That is a good argument, but it looked and sounded like TO ME...that she had some bad runs, got embarrassed about it, and she got frustrated (understandably) about judging, then quit and tried to retroactively cover her butt.

Plus...I said already that it was some of the things she was quoted as saying afterwards that really gave me a sour feeling about her.

Like I said..you buy it, I don't, but I'm self aware enough to say that maybe it's because the times have made me extremely cynical towards these latest generations.

I have never been one for saying the PC thing to stay in everyones good graces and I never will be, whether I sound foolish or not to you is irrelevant to me, but I do have a mind that can be changed, so I may feel differently about this whole thing later.

She could have competed for individual medals, and been favored for gold in more than one event, but she's continued to drop out of events as she tries to "fix" herself. The only event she has yet to drop out of, and she qualified for every event, is the balance beam, which, I believe, is later this week. She's still working every day to overcome these "twisties". And you're not entirely wrong that she had some bad runs. The question is, why did she have those bad runs? Again, she is currently regarded as the greatest gymnast in the world, possibly ever. She does things no one else can. Yet suddenly she can't land anything. I'm sure she is extremely frustrated by that. I would be. To know you can do it, that you've done it hundreds of times, and then suddenly you can't....that has to be maddening. Especially when it happens at the Olympics.

No one is asking you to be PC. Your gruffness is part of your charm. But that's not going to change me from trying to sway your opinion. When all these other gymnasts come forward testifying to the truth of the phenomenon, and I take into account what Simone Biles has done, I think she deserves the benefit of the doubt. The last thing any of us would want to see is her seriously injuring herself to please others when she knows she isn't currently able to land her stunts.

Someone started the discussion comparing Butch's 2013 team to this year's team. I've been keeping track of the roster since that year and looking at things like Average 247 Composite rating by position, total blue chip players, and overall roster construction. I have included the Average 247 composite table below just to show where this team stands in terms of talent (based on recruiting rankings). Here are my takeaways:

1. This team is less talented that any of Pruitt's teams, but the 2020 team was the most talented and we see how that worked out.
2. There is more talent that Butch's first two years, but is on par with 2017, which was the only time we have every lost 8 games in a season.
3. Most of the individual position units are on the low end except for DB's, which surprised me.
4. I forgot how little talent the 2013 team had.
