I've always been of the mindset that coaches drive the star ratings....cause unlike most recruit analyst and such they are actually visiting all these players (at least the ones they are offering) and seeing them in person.

The recruiting websites/analyst then adjust according to which coaches are interest and how many are.


But to me the gap between a 3 star and 4 star is extremely small in HS football. It can be the difference in playing on a 2-8 team or a 10-0 team. With how every state has different divisions it's honestly impossible to truly evaluate the thousands of HS kids every year that are graduating. It's why even now we see NFL stars emerge from no name schools or didn't even play football in college.
