If any recruit saw our defensive plays this year, they could obviously see where immediate needs areOffensive players can see how they would be used based on the success we had last year. Defensive players don’t have that luxury. The D was on the field too many plays and running around tired. Too many plays pads stats but also leaves a lot of bad film if you are playing tired. Then you have other coaches insinuating its shows our coaches aren’t good.
It seems to me reading LA’s posts about this new expectation is we aren’t trying to be the best in Football. That should be the goal. You can’t be the best without getting players and apparently we want the “good kids” that might not be as talented. That’s perfect if you want to get your teeth kicked in by your rivals every season and go to the Birmingham Bowl… ugh just frustrating reading that. Hopefully Heupel can get some magic in here.Take a look at the Fall standings for the NCAA Director’s Cup
Lol what a joke.IDK how long it'll last. A while. FWIW, UT does research on this, and there are a lot of fans who're tired of the instability. The university is tired of being embarrassed. And there is a very strong leadership push for strengthening academics. All of which folds into "the right way" position as a foundation for rebuilding UT sports.
It's true that TV dollars are program drivers. It's also true that UT needs facility upgrades beyond the master plan and has been slow-- very slow, in some cases-- to execute. And UT has higher academic aspirations than some schools. Lot of competition for slices of a bigger pie. But UT does want to compete-- hence, the Spyre partnership to pool funding and broker deals across UT sports. It's better on multiple levels for this to be handled through a collective external to UT. And having Spyre affiliate with Opendorse is better, as well.
Recruiting and staffing-- that's where UT can fast-track. It's up to the coaches to be more aggressive within the expectations UT has created. IMO, that's where some programs can rise above while others may be more conservative. We'll see.
most will. for a while. i know i will, and i am happy it seems that era is on it's way behind us.Think you've nailed UT's strategy-- and the expectation that fans will be proud to support the teams and happy that the decade of instability is over.
I think transfers from teams that stack 5*s is understandable. These kids buy the snake oil guys like Saban and Kirby sell and go thinking they'll get their shot, only to be relegated to second string or recruited over. So I don't blame them for wanting to go where they can start, and possibly set themselves up for a future in the NFL. Imagine if Joe Burrow had never transferred to LSU from Ohio State? He may never have seen the field at Ohio State, and now he's a star NFL QB. And then you have guys who go to the lesser school for one reason or another and have breakout performances that earn them a chance to move up to a bigger school. I don't blame them for taking that opportunity. And in reverse, kids who don't pan out at big schools can move to smaller schools and see playing time they wouldn't have otherwise. So while there are certainly pitfalls to the portal, there are plenty of benefits as well.Doc,
I doubt if we'll ever know who put these guys in the portal---the coaches or the players. The thing that gets overlooked is the loss of their scholarship when the player puts his name in the portal. I'm sure every player understands this, so I tend to believe that most of these departures are driven by the staff.
From a parent perspective, would you want your kid to lose his scholarship because he was unhappy with playing time?
But its not. I like when @LA Vol comes by because I know he has some connections. But I hate it at the same time because he always gives me the sads. TN is fine being second fiddle. They know staying bowl eligible and staying out of Sankeys way will keep the coffers full. Thats all they want. The strengthening academics crap is ND, thats our ceiling making it to the playoffs and getting ran expect we play 2 playoff teams every year, so 10-2 at best will be our ceiling. Just sad, I want to get to experience what older fans got to in 98. I want to actually be able to watch the Vols in Atlanta and be interested and know what happened unlike 07 where I basically only know because ive seen the highlights a few hundred times. It makes me sad that ill never get to experience what older fans got to.That should be the goal starting at the very top.
You pretty much nailed it. Must’ve been other iffy moments in the game. The crux of the issue is basically everyone heard the errant whistle BEFORE the catch. Then the refs claim it happened after Boyd caught it. Kinda making it up as they go along.
But the portal numbers don't pan out. Since its inception. over half of the players haven't found another home. That's a bunch of scholarships lost and I'm sure a burden on their families.I think transfers from teams that stack 5*s is understandable. It took UGA 7 years starting with more talent than we had, and stacking top recruiting classes. We havent even started that part of the 7 year climb. This way at best is going to take a decade. Its just not it.You guys are misinterpreting some of what LA is saying. The administration does not want to be mediocre. However, they want to first stabilize the volatility that has occurred over the last 15 years. To do that, they bring in coaches that are solid developers and good people. In turn, they are looking for a type of student athlete that is athletic but also with a good head on their shoulders who put forth the effort.
Josh Heupel is what the doctor ordered. I guarantee you that he wants to win. If you want to turn things around, you have to be exciting and give yourself a chance in games that have previously been blowouts. That’s what he’s done so far. If he gets his teams to play like last year, we will break through with a win against our top 3 rivals. It’s inevitable because he can scheme it up and score points.
Football, women’s basketball, women’s soccer, men’s golf, tennis, women’s volleyball are all on the upswing. I don’t think it’s a coincidence. While people will point to yesterday, men’s basketball and softball are on solid footing, too.

I'm sure it is a burden on their family, but no more so than anyone else who isn't on scholarship. The portal is a double-edged sword. It helps some kids and hurts others. But the portal numbers don't pan out. Since its inception. over half of the players haven't found another home.
