Please tell us the grizzly story…if no one was hurt.
No one was hurt, other than maybe my feelings because I was so scared.
My wife and I were hiking to St Mary Falls, typical trail with a lot of bends. As we were approaching one we heard someone yelling at us but couldn’t tell what they were saying.
They were coming from the opposite direction and were up higher so they could see us.
They kept yelling and I finally thought they said “bear behind you” so we started walking faster. Then they got really loud and said “No, turn around, a bear is coming toward you.” Just before turning I saw the grizz on the trail.
You’re not supposed to panic but I was probably pretty close. We walked as fast as we could without running. But my wife can’t walk real fast so that didn’t help my mental state.
We both got our bear spray out and were to spray if needed. I kept looking back but couldn’t see him because of the bends. I was sure that sucker was taking the shortcut through the brush to us.
The worst part was probably when after a bit I yelled to the other group and ask where he was. They said “he’s right behind you.”
Thankfully he wasn’t interested in us and eventually went another direction.
We all met back at the trailhead and found out there were others there watching it all and waiting til he was gone before they started.
They said he was about 50 feet from us a good bit of the time. I don’t think he was that close or I would’ve seen him when looking back.
I no longer like hiking in bear country without other people around.
