Mar’Keise “Bucky” Irving -
As I understand it there are 3 basic types of running backs, power backs, speed backs, and all-purpose backs.
Mostly power backs are grinders. Most times they don’t have a lot of speed so with these guys you don’t get what Coach Mack calls the “sexy” runs. They’re thought to be good in short yardage situations. Rarely do they get caught behind the line of scrimmage and even if they do they still have the strength to get back to the line to avoid taking a loss.
Last year Evans, Small, and Wright were tackled behind the line of scrimmage 5-6% of their rushing attempts. Whitehead never took a loss in 33 rushing attempts. Chandler & Gray in 2019 (non-Covid year) were tackled behind the line 12-13% of their carries. Another benefit of the power back in short yardage and redzone situations is the defense loads up to stop the run leading to favorable one-on-one matchups for wide receivers and tight ends.
Speed backs are as advertised. They’re often very shifty and elusive and if they can get one or two effective blocks they can break the really “sexy” runs. They’re generally good receivers out of the backfield. The thing they lack is power so they are easily tackled and extremely vulnerable behind the line of scrimmage.
All-purpose backs have it all. They have enough power to run between the tackles, break off “sexy” runs, and are good receivers out of the backfield. Alvin Kamara is an ultimate all-purpose back. jmo.
I think Small is an all-purpose back, Whitehead is a power back, Wright and Sampson I see as speed backs. Evans is an all-purpose back. I think Williams-Thomas is an all-purpose back. jmo.
Bucky Irving is an all-purpose back and a good one at that. jmo.
Note: He goes by the name Bucky.
Minnesota fans hate that he’s leaving. His leaving thread on their forum dominates their front page. They’re not mad but they see it as a huge loss. He made a good name for himself there as a true freshman.
I listened to a Minnesota podcast with I guess their main 247 reporter and the guy says Bucky leaving Minnesota is mostly NIL related. There were 3 guys on the podcast. They talked a lot about Tennessee. They talked about our collective. They talked about our $2M/year QB. They talked about how Minnesota is so far behind in the NIL game, how Minnesota doesn’t have the fanbase/boosters to compete with the Tennessee’s, the Alabama’s, or the Ohio States of the world. They talked about how the Gophers have to compete with 3 other major sports programs in the twin cities.
The thing that stuck out the most to me was what they considered the main reason why Bucky is leaving the Gophers.
Bucky comes from a tough area of Chicago. It’s really bad. The 247 guy said Bucky sees this as an opportunity to get his mom out of this area in Chicago.
