Saban is trying to mess it up for everyone else right now because they didn't have the mindset to think outside the box in the beginning. Stalling other programs is the only chance they have for the next 2 years to stay in the lead. The comparison to the bootleggers that were upset when prohibition ended is spot on. NIL has completely messed up the Saban business model (which Kirby also uses) and he sees the playing field leveling out.
That's what gets me about folks saying that UT has to pay players like Nico to come. He was going to get paid if he went to Alabama or UGA. NIL has simply leveled the playing field and Spyre was ready for it.
I think Saban is painting himself in a corner and there's going to be a lot of negative consequences for him. He's definitely making it harder for Alabama to have a successful NIL collective because they'll be directly at odds with his comments. You're also going to have some folks who will be more than happy to air the dirty laundry on his program when it comes to paying players.
Edit: I am somewhere at the moment where my screen is refreshing so slowly that I didn't see the quotes you included. It was just a blank space.
My point, in a nutshell, is that Saban (and the sycophant "sportswriters") should be called out for his sophistry. It is another instance of Saban's crookedness. It is not exculpatory. I didn't defend any posts that may have missed the form of Saban's deception that you notice.
I 100% agree with this take. The thing is A&M is closer to Bama at this time but but don't be surprised if a orange supercar with a power T driven by CJH comes blowing by both of them in the next year or so.I think we’re the sleeping giant to fear, but immediate in Sabans rear view mirror is A&M. They beat them last year, they have a massive donor class that can bring the $$$$, a fan base similar than ours starving for a winner, and most importantly in the same division.
We’re finna light folk up, but make no mistake, A&M scares the crap out of Saban today.
The "parity" Saban seeks most likely boils down to an NIL salary cap. If implemented he and Alabama would still be able to consistently dominate in the recruiting world based off of reputation. Without such a ceiling the Tide isn't so high.
My 2 cents, NO. He's good, but with the talent advantage hes had he should've won as much if not more than what he did. Lets see what happens when the playing field is level. Same thing with Kirby at UGA lets see what happens when he cant stack class after class.Patiently waiting for some one to come out and ask the question if Saban is actually the goat, or could anyone win with the best paid for players?!?
Call the reputation what you want. If a 5 star player can only acquire so much $ under a salary cap then the UGAs, Bamas, and Ohio States of the recruiting world continue their stranglehold on elite high school talent.Reputation or free Dodge Chargers?
If they use a cap, the bag man comes back into play. Which is what Saban wants.
There are more nuances to this. For profit versus non-profit orgs controlling things. Schools are non-profits. A controlling org that operates with contract, compensation, and cap issues is walking the high wire. The tax man wins with NIL versus cash in the Mickie D bags and Dodge Chargers driven for free.
There are good reasons the NCAA has not responded with the rules of the game. They are land mines with trip wires everywhere. They need defendable legal and judiciary guidance that includes. What Constitutional law, state laws and federal acts are they willing to take on to keep a shister and his cronies happy?
Saban didn't do too well coaching professionals in a league with every organization on a level financial playing field.Patiently waiting for some one to come out and ask the question if Saban is actually the goat, or could anyone win with the best paid for players?!?
In hind sight I would have taken it over what we got in exchange.
