Sure, Saban is trying to phrase things in a way to intentionally deceive people while claiming he is somehow technically not lying.🙄

I am surprised you are playing along with Saban's corrupt crooked-politician/media schtick when you know good and well that Saban breaks every rule in the book with impunity and is terrified that he might have to compete on a level playing field. Part of Saban's "art" of lying, in fact, is exactly the intention that people are deliberately led to mishear him as "saying" (while he does not say) that bammer does not and has not paid players. You omitted this half of Saban's doublespeak.

Saban is counting on sycophants to defend his speeches on technicalities. An essential part of the schtick is that the reporters do not call him out precisely on his intentionally deceptive distinction-making that you are referring to and then ask him point blank about his long history of illegally paying players at bammer and if other teams paying players under the new rules erases his unfair advantage. Ask him about Tua. Ask him about his players driving around in Mercedes from Saban's dealership.

What you are mistaking for lack of sublety in this forum is, in fact, people who understand what the real issue is and are speaking to it directly without cow-towing to Saban's sophistries.

This is not to say that you don't do well to notice Saban's special way of deceiving people here. There is a certain charm in spotting it. But, upon closer inspection, his phrasing turns out to be as rotten and corrupt as everything else under Saban's tenure.

So, you missed all the places I said they are cheaters, and fighting against NIL because it levels the playing field when they were paying players under the table.

However, I believe it worth noting the distinction in his comments. He didn't say, "We paid 3 mil to our players"... and then say "They're buying players and we're not." He said that he supports NIL, encourages the players to get agents and get paid, while the school and coaches stay out of it, as opposed to booster collectives that are part of the recruiting process and have the coaches budgeting the $$$. He's claiming that bama players made $3 mil and the school had no part in it while other schools were actively paying players through NIL collectives.

Point is Saban doesn't like NIL because he can't control it and can't keep all the talent he wants. Another point is he has opened a can of worms that is not going to be good for him. Forget the subtleties. They don't matter.

Edit: I am somewhere at the moment where my screen is refreshing so slowly that I didn't see the quotes you included. It was just a blank space.

My point, in a nutshell, is that Saban (and the sycophant "sportswriters") should be called out for his sophistry. It is another instance of Saban's crookedness. It is not exculpatory. I didn't defend any posts that may have missed the form of Saban's deception that you notice.
