I agree and I disagree.

College is not for everybody, but the guidance departments in the 2 schools I taught in seemed to think it is; constantly pushing students to college. Some need to look elsewhere, i.e., trade/vocational, military.

On the other hand, after a few years of teaching I came to believe that one of the main problems with schools is that they try to be all things to all people. Too many classes/paths.

As a result, they don't do anything well. Or least not as well as they could. If you try to do too much you spread yourself thin and it all suffers. Specifically, the basics and core courses. Limit your focus to a reasonable number you can do well.

But then, if the basics were taught better at the lower levels maybe this wouldn't be a problem.

I would contend that if the federal government would quit poking their big fat noses into the education and leave it to the states like the 10th amendment says they should then each state would be better able to offer more options to their schools. Bloat and overly broad requirements from the Depth of Education doesn't help the situation.

Good to know. My buddy also thought of doing a boot camp, but ultimately decided against it and just learned on his own and worked on a few projects himself.

He suggested hackingwithswift.com and said that guy is invaluable. If you have any other suggestions, pass them along.

My biggest concern is the possibility of remote work. I'm in a very small tech market, so I'd almost definitely need a remote position. But I'm also in zero hurry, so I could wait it out. First I'm going to work on an app for my wife's business and then, possibly, her largest client out of Gatlinburg. See how things go. Contract work also seems like a good opportunity starting out, though I'd prefer the mentorship aspect.

Learning on your own is definitely an avenue as well. I think the reason I went the bootcamp route is it can be harder to get your foot in the door. Having a legit and nice portfolio of work you’ve done is great, but if you’re applying at a bigger company your resume most likely won’t make it past the automatic resume screeners. Still though, once you found that first job from there you are good to go.

I have done minimal swift, so not knowledgeable with online learning sources specifically geared towards it but I liked starting with codeacademy.com and freecodecamp.org. Sites like this are great for the fundamentals like learning syntax of specific languages, looping, objects/arrays, all of the basic foundations. From there I like to find YouTube channels that I like that do code alongs for projects and detailed explanations. Those two things can give a great foundation and then from there just start building projects you are interested in on your own. You will get lost, stuck and mad throughout but that’s what makes a good developer/engineer.. learning to problem solve.

On that same line of thought, also look at things like codility and leetcode. They do a great job of teaching you how to problem solve with real world problems. It’s also great technical interview practice as most technical interviews are done just like this and some are using these very platforms. My technical interview for my current job was done on Codility.

Must not engage in political talk.....

But there seems to be a section of this country overly reliant on a nanny government, that forget the 10th Amendment exists, and that our Founding Fathers believed in limiting the power of federal government. A federal government that has grown bloated and far larger and more powerful than it was ever meant to be.

Dammit, I couldn't help myself.

It's not my fault, mods!

Y’all. I was so mad at my wife last night. We finally started The Terminal List on Amazon and watched an episode. We gave the account info to my parents and they watch things on there from time to time too. Well, halfway through the episode I’m like, “are you sure this is episode 1? It doesn’t feel like a first episode.” She said she was positive it was. We finished the episode and the credits rolled and it gave us suggestions for a new series and I sat up and was like “WTF”.… my parents had watched the series before us and we watched the last episode of Terminal List without seeing any of the other episodes because it didn’t reset to episode 1 😒

I told her I wanted a divorce. I’ll keep y’all updated on that process 😂

So...... your wife is about to be single?

😁

This is true. Another example of how government involvement, in pretty much anything, usually turns out bad

Silver lining? Took all the angst and suspense out of it.

Haha…at least you made quick work of it and can move on to the next series.

Post pics of your wife so I can offer better advice.

Sorry to hear that. Have you checked to see what your max social security benefit will be if you wait it out till age 70 (3 years past the full retirement age)? They keep upping the benefits till age 70.

Benefit Calculators | SSA

There are also more extreme routes such as a home equity loic or reverse mortgage (I'm wary of the way many firms construct these, though they're not 100% without benefit in some circumstances). A last resort is selling your property (assuming you have equity/paid-in-full) to help fund monthly expenses on top of social security or any 401k/ira/pension you may have.

Tbh if I could go back to being 22, the one thing I'd change is pouring into my 401k right off the bat. Every HS/college should show students the MASSIVE effect this has on retirement.

The benefit of time to investing is huge. If they would show students how to calculate the benefit of even minor donations to a retirement account starting at age 18 it would blow people's minds how much money they could have at retirement.
