I hope JG wins the job too. At the very least Chryst is going to up the competition and make JG better. And quite frankly I doubt we make it all season without playing 2 or more QB's so we're going to need Chryst even if he doesn't start vs WVU.

My thoughts aren’t as much about who I hope will win.

The coaches watched a ton of tape. Then proceeded to push hard for Chryst. A player our OC was familiar with having played in the same conference.

That doesn’t happen imo if the coaches don’t expect him to start.

If JG beats him out then we’re better off than the coaches expected us to be.

I just don’t think Chryst was brought in for depth

If chryst were any good he would still be at Stanford. Dude couldn’t succeed with that offensive line and running back core. Sad

If Chryst is the starter, then we will have to ride with Shrout or a true freshman next year, because JG will very likely leave. I am not saying that JG should start because he might leave. If Chryst gives us the best chance to win, I want him out there. I hope JG is good enough to beat him out so that we don't have to go with a grad transfer as our starter and then start over next year.

i will take underwhelm at 11 and 2...it comes down to decision making. Who is going to take the check down to keep the chains moving. I did not see that in the spring game. A ton of iffy throws imo.

11-2 is kind of a misleading stat though when you look at it in context.

6 of those wins came in 2016 to teams who couldn’t make bowls.

2 wins in 2017 came against teams that went 1-11.

The other 3 came against teams that went a combine 20-19.

I don’t really think JG would have come out any worse in the W/L column if he’d been leading Stanford’s offenses against that kind of competition. A QB would have to be pretty terrible to come out much worse than that.

It’s why I’m favoriting Chryst to win the job. More consistent accuracy wise and experience. We will have a simple throw offense for the most part. hopefully can make plays with his legs like he did in 2016 for Stanford.

I’m just wondering where you look at Chryst’s games thus far and see “consistent accuracy”?

Could totally happen if the coaches don’t expect to get through the season with 1 QB and aren’t willing to miss a bowl year one because they don’t have a serviceable backup.

Why not push for a kid as a contingency if you think that’s the case and he happens to be a QB you’re somewhat familiar with anyway?

Agree. Helton didn't recruit JG did he? But Helton did recruit Chryst and believes he fits what they want to do on offense. They definitely brought him in here to start and if he doesn't that means JG is going to win us quite a few ballgames this fall.

Wouldn't be surprised if the MSU RB transfer is starting vs WVU or at the very least getting a good share of the carries.

Same with A&M CB if he chooses UT.

My thoughts as well. If we’d held on to Martinez last year or were looking likely to land a big time QB in this class, I wouldn’t be worrying about it.

But I don’t see how anybody can look at our QB situation and not see JG winning the job as the ideal situation. If he can’t beat out someone who’s career has been defined by never being able to keep a starting job for a whole season, our outlook at QB is not good in 2018 or 2019. It might even set up a situation where we need the Bailey kid to come in and be the starter as a true freshman.

QBs in 2019 class are not deep. Hubbs said we will probably play the transfer market and land a "franchise type" QB in 2020

He’s much better now. Ball is coming out a lot faster. Still holds it long on some plays but he’s much better processing things now. Passing concepts are much better as well too.

I agree. Personally, I like the fact he is trying to be a good passing QB. A lot of times, you see QBs with his athleticism rely on that ability too much and try to take off running way too often, which leads to injuries, turnovers, etc.

I don’t think anyone doesn’t want JG to win. It’s a mater of what they think will happen. I would love if he turned into a great QB and carried us through this turnaround.

I've been off and on the thread the last few months so please forgive the old subject.

What happened to Tyler Byrd as a DB? It was a favorite talking point in this thread for so long, and then...nothin'. I missed the in 'n' out.

He spent some time at CB, since he is the best ever... then he moved to Safety, because, not so much, then back to WR, because he apparently is not quite the HOF player he was made out to be for the last 3 years, and he has to have a position somewhere.

I’m not a fan of this QB class either (or at least none of the guys we have a good shot with at this point in time).

And I hope we’re not having to play the transfer market again heading into 2019. Getting starters on a one year loan two years in a row isn’t a very good recipe for offensive growth. Unless we land a couple stud RBs and just improve on the OL and in the run game.

With all we stand to be losing on defense heading into 2019, we’re gonna need the offense to take a big step forward. Ideally, that means returning a starter at QB.

I look at it as a win-win-win situation. If Chryst comes in and earns the job and keeps it while JG learns the system. Good. If he comes in wins the job but loses it later in the year because JG is better. Good. If he comes in and pushed JG to be better. Good. I don't see why you guys are looking at it in a ways that the sky is falling because JG doesn't start against WVU (hypothetical)
