So I call Fitz and I say, Hey, Im going to be in Atlanta on Saturday night. Can you fly in? Me and you will get together. He said, Sure. This was, like, on a Wednesday Wednesday morning.
He called me back about an hour later and said, Hey, Coach, Im going to be in Birmingham tonight at 9 oclock. Im going to ride down to Tuscaloosa, because I really want this job. I want to be a part of this staff. I want to be a part of what you and those guys are going to build at Tennessee.
It didnt take long for Pruitt to realize he wanted to hire Fitzgerald, who spent the past four seasons with the NFLs Houston Texans after previous stints at Penn State and South Carolina.
The fact that Fitzgerald wanted to be a part of the Vols program, Pruitt said, was one of the reasons he ultimately settled on Fitzgerald.
We met for four or five hours, and I actually went home, Pruitt said, recalling their meeting in Tuscaloosa. I thought about it, called (athletic director Phillip) Fulmer and, shoot, thats the guy I wanted.
He wanted the job, and I want people that want to be at Tennessee.
