Tennessee Vols football: Jeremy Pruitt says Vols strength coach Craig Fitzgerald 'wanted the job'

“So I call Fitz and I say, ‘Hey, I’m going to be in Atlanta on Saturday night. Can you fly in? Me and you will get together.’ He said, ‘Sure.’ This was, like, on a Wednesday — Wednesday morning.

“He called me back about an hour later and said, ‘Hey, Coach, I’m going to be in Birmingham tonight at 9 o’clock. I’m going to ride down to Tuscaloosa, because I really want this job. I want to be a part of this staff. I want to be a part of what you and those guys are going to build at Tennessee.’”

It didn’t take long for Pruitt to realize he wanted to hire Fitzgerald, who spent the past four seasons with the NFL’s Houston Texans after previous stints at Penn State and South Carolina.

The fact that Fitzgerald wanted to be a part of the Vols’ program, Pruitt said, was one of the reasons he ultimately settled on Fitzgerald.

“We met for four or five hours, and I actually went home,” Pruitt said, recalling their meeting in Tuscaloosa. “I thought about it, called (athletic director Phillip) Fulmer and, shoot, that’s the guy I wanted.

“He wanted the job, and I want people that want to be at Tennessee.”

I am so glad we got Pruitt.

He might not have been anyone’s first pick, but man I think we finally hit a home run.

The guy is going to get it done.

Who was the quarterback that ended up at Ohio State? At least that's what I think I remember. That was a good one.

Was the "Three Amigos" a separate thread?

And, whichever recruit introduced us (many of us, anyway) to the term, "bone to bone"

So the Vols are playing WV in the 2018 Kickoff Classic and in BB are playing WV in next season's SEC vs Big 12 Showdown.

Is that the one that ended up at Ohio State? I think that was the one I was thinking of in my earlier post.
