I'll take the over on that 5.5 vegas line... people forget real quick about back to back 9-win seasons after one year of the worst coaching ever and QBs taking turn getting their feet wet vs top-tier SEC schools

Well despite the coaching we had Dobbs, Kamara, Barnett, and Sutton. I dont think we have those type of players on this 2018 team especially at QB who could turn a 10 yard sack into a TD.

Kamara and Barnett? Maybe not. Dobbs and Sutton, yeah, I think we do.

Before you guys call me a sunshine pumper...

I know... he hasn't done a damned thing on the field yet...

.... but what if Pruitt actually used Kongbo effectively at OLB? I could see stupid Barnettesque sack numbers there...

Also, Allen/Taylor/Sapp/Peterson... any of those guys could step up in 3-4 and be monsters... We're not short on OLB talent this year... we'll see how they get used... main thing is keeping the fatties healthy

And Kelly was no Kamara but he got the job done didn't he? I can see another Kelly out of that batch easy

Out of the lot you listed... Sutton is the one we definitely don't expect to have

I've said before there's a solid core of roster talent in Knoxville... We don't have Georgia or Alabama's depth, and we had an awful year last year... but there are definitely players in place that have pedigree and skill.

We've already got a legit SEC starting front 7 and a couple safeties that can get the job done...

Defense:
- Warrior is All-SEC caliber if they use him correctly
- Allen is a highly touted bender that can rush the passer and run cover
- Phillips hasn't had a chance to be the guy, but he's a former 5 star that's flashed elite pass rushing skill
- Kongbo, with proper coaching, could be an elite pass rusher
- Sapp is a tackling machine
- Bituli... see Sapp
- Kirkland Jr has balled when healthy
- Tuttle was a highly touted DT that has all the abilities needed to excel
- Peterson could be elite if we can get his ass on campus
- Abernathy is a SEC caliber FS... he's not going to be elite but he's not a hole.
- Taylor is legit
- Johnson can plug a run

Offense:

QB: I really don't hate our QB situation... if JG can put it together, we'll have a way better than expected year... if not, Chryst is solid unless he starts throwing bombs downfield... but even if he does start throwing a little off the mark bombs downfield, our X/Z WRs are as legit as anyone's in the SEC... I trust Jennings and Calloway to go get a 50/50 ball if it's gettable

WR: Jennings and Calloway will play on Sundays... Palmer, Byrd, and Johnson are solid depth

RB: Between London, Chandler, Jordan, Banks, Coleman, Fant, and Fils-Amie... I'm not worried about finding a RB that can hit the holes and make plays

OL: Smith, Kennedy, and Richmond are the only guys I trust here... maybe the biggest question mark and it's not a good question mark to have, especially with Trey Smith not officially being cleared to play yet...

We're really NOT in bad shape anywhere other than the OL and CornBread positions... and we might be fine there as well it's just unproven

the main thing for the whole squad is a complete lack of quality depth... in a couple years I believe we'll have that... but as of today, Pruitt's got his job cut out keeping these guys healthy.... cause we can compete and win against anybody in the SEC besides Alabama and Georgia right now if we stay healthy and make adjustments properly when things aren't working...

A lot to ask of a first time head coach though...

If it wasn't for that a$$ hat UGA player (Kablanow), Tuttle would either be in the NFL or would be a 1st rounder next year. It was a crap play. Tuttle is a beast.

SMH...that is betting on a whole handful of HUGE ifs. I hope you're right, but..

Dobbs? Who in your opinion on this team is capable of being anywhere near as effective as Dobbs, at least right now?

JG has all the Dobbs tools...

...I mean... he didn't use them like Dobbs did... but if you fix him he could do a good Dobbs impression

I'm not saying we win the SEC this year... I'm saying it's not a huge stretch to go bowling with 8 wins if we take out WV

Agreed. Agreed agreed agreed.

The bolded part is what we're going to need to remember as a fanbase, though. I have more faith in Pruitt than I do any other first-time head coach in the SEC. He's coordinated at the highest level for three premier programs. His players love him. That's all really, really good. But he's still a first year HC. I really hope we don't crucify him over some missed or bad calls that he'll inevitably make over the next few years.

I thought there was a lot to complain about Butch for-- including his sheet that called for kicking the PAT at Florida in 2015-- that the fanbase went a little over the top on. Turns out, there was still plenty of reason for him not to have this job. There will undoubtedly be a bad timeout or an offensive goof (which is what we call bold calls that don't work out) and as long as we have patience with CJP, we'll be better for it.

All that said, I still think we beat our cupcakes (3), Vandy, Kentucky, and Florida, with Mizzou being a toss-up. I've already bet the over on our 5.5 total.

JG may hopefully get a lot better, but he isn't ever going to be as good as Dobbs imo.

I thought it was interesting they said in the VQ chat Harris could play WR here too, might also explain taking an extra DB.

It’s anazing how many times he bailed out our OL. Turning a sack into a 5, 14, or 30 yard gain.

I completely under appreciated the guy. His career highlight film is unbelievable. When you watch them all together like that it leaves you speechless. A good coach would have made him a better passer, used him better, and made him more consistent.

Dobbs is probably the 2nd best qb to ever play here. He did it with a bad OL in front of him too. We have another below 500 season imo if dobbs isn’t our QB his senior year.

Dobbs is not top 2 maybe not even top 5. Not because he wasn't good but because we've had some good QBs at this school.

Listen... I expect Chryst to be the QB by season's end cause I don't have a lot of faith in JG...

You asked who could possibly be Dobbs on roster, right... JG does have the Dobbs tools... and a more live arm to boot... accuracy? Dunno bout that... Leadership? Definitely not... and it's hard to coach intangibles...

If Chryst starts he cuts off any threat of QB RPO, which with the Coach Joe in-house cuts the playbook by 1/3 from what I've seen of it...

That being said... if the coaches find some way to flay the deer in headlights out of JG, I mean... that's the guy that could put it together and do the Dobbs thing... don't get your hopes up lol

Dobbs is not top 2 maybe not even top 5. Not because he wasn't good but because we've had some good QBs at this school.

Manning
Shuler
Kelly
Dobbs
Clausen

.... yea he's top5 as long as I've been alive... maybe there were better ones in the General Neyland years...

Def not better than Shuler or Kelly tho
