He’s better than bobby Dodd and Condredge Holloway

I wouldn’t put Bobby Dodd in there, completely different era of football.

Dobbs was not better than Condredge Holloway.

I’d put Casey Clausen in there instead of Dodd.

Peyton
Shuler
Holloway
Tee
Clausen
Kelly
Dobbs

If we're talking "all time" then the "different era" argument gets thrown out the window

Emerson was rusty in the spring, still recovering from a nasty injury and a season off from football. He should be much improved in fall camp. They've known Lawless was out for months, so they've planned around that.

Chryst can't run, so by default, since he doesn't have that tool, yes... he has less potential...

He's money on short and mid-range less than 25 yards... and he has experience in big games... he's good at reading the line of scrimmage for audibles, making 2nd and 3rd reads, and knows when to check down...

Can JG run a more explosive offense if he plays to his full potential? Yes.

Is Chryst the best QB on the roster if we play tomorrow? Most likely... it isn't going to be pulling teeth... it'll be more like watching Alabama's offense with McCarron before his Senior season... except with a possibly terrible o-line pending Trey Smith's evaluation if none of the unprovens can step up

Chryst is much better at running than getting to his 2nd and 3rd reads. His deceptive mobility is one of his best assets. Watch him against Oregon State or SDSU and you'll see him staring guys down and throwing into coverage (sometimes while checkdowns are open).

What was so special about Halloway?

“Inaccurate passer” Dobbs had more passing TDs his SR year than Halloway had total TDs in 3 years.

I understand different era but Dobbs smokes him in every measurable stat

Hopefully Crosby can at least push some other guys on the OL or contribute in short yardage looks or something.

With him for sure on the OL now and Kongbo at OLB, it will be interesting to see how our 2 deep looks on the DL.

Seems like our top 3 will be some combo of Tuttle, Gooden, and Phillips. Not really sure who the next 3 up are. Maybe Alexis Johnson and Emerson, if he can get back to full health. Haven't heard much positive about Butler or Bennet from the new staff so far. Harris and Mincey seem to have the size to get a crack at some PT. Some here were high on Garland as well.

Stats increase with each passing season. We’re in an era of high octane, up tempo spread offenses.

Two things i’ll Never trust

1. A talking snake.

2. Roster height and weights.

I’m sure the S&C is doing a great job, but they can literally pencil in whatever weights they want with no accountability 😂

I don't see any way Dobbs isn't top 5. He's the only reason Butch lasted beyond 3 years here. He racked up some crazy stats. If he has a team with any of those defenses from the mid/late 90s or early 2000s, he gets us to 10-2 or better at least in 2015 and 2016.

Here's some arguments he has going for him.

•Finished Tennessee career with a 23-12 record (including 3-0 in bowls) as starting quarterback, tying Condredge Holloway (1972-74) for the fifth-most wins by starting quarterback.
•Set UT records for career rushing yards by a quarterback (2,160), career rushing touchdowns by a QB (32), single-season rushing yards by a QB (831 in 2016) and single-season rushing touchdowns by a QB (12 in 2016). His 2,160 rushing yards also rank 14th among all players in program history.
•His 7,138 career passing yards rank fifth in Tennessee history and his 9,360 yards of total offense (7,138 passing, 2,160 rushing, 62 receiving) rank third in program history behind only Peyton Manning (11,020) and Casey Clausen (9,577)
•His 3,781 yards of total offense (2,946 passing, 831 rushing, 4 receiving) in 2016 ranks second in Tennessee history only to Peyton Manning's 3,789 in 1997
•Joined Mississippi State's Dak Prescott and Florida's Tim Tebow as the only SEC quarterbacks to record 15 passing touchdowns and 10 rushing touchdowns in multiple seasons
•Is one of only four quarterbacks in SEC history to have 50 career passing touchdowns and 25 career rushing touchdowns. The others are Florida's Tim Tebow, Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel and Mississppi State's Dak Prescott.
•Set or tied UT bowl records in 2016 Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl for most passing yards per attempt (10.7), most rushing touchdowns (three, tying James Stewart), most total plays (47, tying Jimmy Streater), most points scored (18, tying James Stewart) and most touchdowns responsible for (four).

Understandable but what was he like on the field? Seems like Dobbs was the much better runner and was a more accurate passer.

He was before my time.

Yeah...I've been kind of wondering whether guys like Kongbo, Darrell Taylor, and Deandre Johnson really lost weight or whether they were just always smaller than the previous staff wrote down.

Condredge Holloway was a magician on the field. You should check out some of his film, he was pretty badass.

Ive seen a little here and there. I just expected he’d have better than 5TD and 5INT his Sr year.

What was up with that?

Dobbs was quite the magician as well. I feel like his legend will grow the further away we get from his time here.

All the mods on VQ predicted JG as the starter tonight.

247 guys have been thinking the same. They're not sure whether he'll hang on to it all year or not, though. They seem to think JG has done enough up to this point to earn some confidence from the staff that he didn't have prior to the spring.

I'm interested to see how it plays out. I'm hoping he can take a big step forward and be the QB we need for the next 2-3 years. Would be great for continuity on offense and give Shrout a better chance at developing and reaching his potential, IMO.

So because he's gone through spring he's the automatic starter according to the writers? Make sense until you realize these coaches are going to focus more on what happens fall practice than what happened in spring.

That's not what I said and I don't think what writers covering the team are saying either. I don't think anyone is declaring him an automatic starter. But if readers ask those guys to make a guess as to who they think will start, they've gotta choose somebody. Edit: And I don't think "he's done enough over the past 7-8 months under the new staff to build a slight lead" is necessarily a bad reason to give if you think JG will be the starter week 1.

What the 247 guys kind of implied in one of their podcasts a few weeks back was that the staff was not very impressed with JG when they first got to campus, but that they've liked the way he's come along so far and have at least some level of comfort with him now. FWIW, they also seemed to think that our week 1 starter won't necessarily be the guy all season.

I kind of inferred that maybe the staff was thinking they'd go with Chryst if things were relatively close in the fall because of the experience factor, but that maybe JG has earned enough trust from them to get the nod as long as he takes care of business in camp. That's all speculation on my part, though.

At least someone finally put Tee up there. Y’all forgetting Ainge too. I’d go:

Manning
Shuler
Tee
Casey
Ainge
Dobbs
Bray
Artful Dodger
Kelly

You could convince me to move Condredge up, but that top 5 ain’t moving.

Ainge could sling it. Great senior season.

3rd all time in career yardage behind Peyton & Iceman.

Hot Take -

If you told me I could choose between Josh Dobbs & Tyler Bray to QB for this upcoming season... I’d pick Bray.

For this system, maybe. But Dobbs as a Sr. threw a pretty nice deep ball and Helton has mentioned wanting to be explosive in the passing game. He was never consistently accurate on the intermediate stuff, though. But I'd be interested to see what Dobbs could do with better coaching. Bray got to work with Chaney for 3 years. I think Bajakian was decent as a QB coach, but Dobbs only had him 2 years and then a mix of Debord and a GA the next two seasons.

Then you've also got to take into account that our OL may be pretty bad this year and having a QB who can turn a blown play by the OL into a first down or a chunk yardage play a few times a game could be a pretty big boon for the offense.
