From a songwriter stand point John Moreland may be better than them all. Truly talented. He will never make the big time unless he loses 300lbs and moves out of Tulsa.
Agree on all counts. Like others have said in here, it's hard not to have Isbell at the top of any list talking about songwriters but Moreland might be number 2 for me, and that is coming from someone who was over in the music forum talking about Tyler Childers probably 2 years ago.

Another name I always throw out when this type of discussion comes up just because he seems to be even less well known than the people that are being discussed here (who aren't exactly household names to begin with) is BJ Barham. Only has one solo album up to this point but he has been the lead singer and only songwriter for a group called American Aquarium (Wilco reference) for a long time. Some of their older albums are just phenomenal to me. There is a song called Road to Nowhere that probably came out a decade ago that I still think I go back and listen to probably once a week, talk about great songwriting.

And just because her song just came on in my office I also need to throw a little love to Sarah Shook. Probably not everybody's cup of tea but she kicks a whole lot of ass.

He can run, that’s first. With our OL still not being where we want it next year, that helps a lot and gives the defense something to worry about.

He has also improved as a passer this year with the help of Enos.

And finally, he’s a leader that his teammates rally around. We need that at the QB position.

I like JG, but Hurts has advantages over him if he comes. If nothing else, the competition would be good

Competition would be good? Competition would not exist. Hurts would take it by a country mile. Hurts makes our offense 10 times better and not because he is all that great.

To paraphrase the man himself: I make one song about drugs and now everyone wants to act like I put acid on my cheerios. It's really not that prevalent in most of his music. Turtles is just the one that stands out to folks.
Yea not true at all... he has many songs that reference pschodellic drug use. He uses terms most folks wouldn’t recognize. For example in Some Days he says “some days you blast off and some days you just smoke”. Blast off is a DMT reference and i am assuming just smoke means weed. I can think of 7 songs off the top of my head that reference it some form or fashion.

If you listen to his lyrics is clearly a big fan of DMT.

You RF experts help me out with something.

Hyams was on Nashville radio this morning and he keeps doubling down that our three grad transfers count toward the 2019 class, which I don't think is the case. Is it? He says we can only sign 22 because of that. That's not true is it?

He also said we have 83 scholarship players but do I remember correctly that Bain made 84? Or no?
i think Bain did make 84. and yeah, i do think we blue shirted the grand transfers. iirc, we didn't have room in the 2018 class because of previous transfers having been counted forward. so we just paid the "credit" forward for lack of a better term. lol

as a result, i think we've been stating all year that we could only sign 22 in this class.

and we'd need to lose some guys off the roster to make room with so few Sr's leaving, so expect attrition.

and to sign the 25 or 26 we want this cycle, we'll probably have to blue shirt 3-4 guys this cycle too.

just pushing #'s from one bucket to another...........

*i could be totally wrong in all this, but this is how i understood it at one time*
:)

Still don't see how lyrics define your style.

Blueshirt 3 for infinity. Not a big deal.

I have listened to American Aquirium. But haven’t heard his solo album. I will check him out.

I have no interest in arguing about it. Obviously those experiences have had a profound effect on his life. Just saying he doesn't think it defines him, and I think it's pretty reductive to box his music up like that. At least we can both agree he's a fantastic songwriter and performer.

Guess I'm wrong about the 22 then. I can never keep all these stupid rules straight. It's weird that we have three guys who have completed their eligibility that will count toward the 2019 class. Makes no sense to me.

Brett McMurphy got trolled lmao

Guys... this music discussion sounds like something for the Pub or even the old night shift crew who used to hang in the Gruden thread. Can y’all hug it out or something? We need to get back to the impending TN dynasty discussion. Lol. Seriously though. 😉👊🏼

Yea I can’t spell worth a dang.

Anytime you put any artist in a genre you are putting them in a box. I agree he is an artist that it is hard to fit into any one genre. Like I said I’m a big fan. I’m not critizing it. I probably know more about that perspective than most if you catch my drift. I was just stating it was “different” in that aspect than say Tyler Childers.

Which Sturgill had a big impact on Tyler’s recent success.

butch got real creative with back counting and counting forward to sign 62 players in 2 years.

and we didn't have a "light" class anywhere in between really to bring it back to zero.
so now Pruitt can't afford to sign a light class either.

at some point he probably will, but i'd expect the next couple years at least, we find a way to sign 25 minimum.

and again, i'm not 100% certain on all that, but i do know that we couldn't count the transfers in 18 because of previous transfers having been counted ahead.

as for the roster attrition, 84 scholarship players, minus, what, 13 seinors, puts you at 71. gonna sign 25 or 26, that's 95 ish...so you gotta lose 10 more at least off the roster.

so we should see some activity on transfers outside just Mcbride in the not too distant future.

I think only 11 of those 13 seniors were on scholarship.

Well his album titles and covers also contribute to him being pretty psychadelic, but I also had never heard the term "cosmic country" before it was associated with Sturgill. I think cosmic country fits him, but more so in his early albums when he had that kickass guitar player. Just don't think he's the same without that guy up there jamming with him. That's my two cents at least. When is Freeze getting announced already?!?
