Agree on all counts. Like others have said in here, it's hard not to have Isbell at the top of any list talking about songwriters but Moreland might be number 2 for me, and that is coming from someone who was over in the music forum talking about Tyler Childers probably 2 years ago. From a songwriter stand point John Moreland may be better than them all. Truly talented. He will never make the big time unless he loses 300lbs and moves out of Tulsa.
Another name I always throw out when this type of discussion comes up just because he seems to be even less well known than the people that are being discussed here (who aren't exactly household names to begin with) is BJ Barham. Only has one solo album up to this point but he has been the lead singer and only songwriter for a group called American Aquarium (Wilco reference) for a long time. Some of their older albums are just phenomenal to me. There is a song called Road to Nowhere that probably came out a decade ago that I still think I go back and listen to probably once a week, talk about great songwriting.
And just because her song just came on in my office I also need to throw a little love to Sarah Shook. Probably not everybody's cup of tea but she kicks a whole lot of ass.
