Let’s start with Smith, who is out with blood clots but has participated in non-contact conditioning this spring. Up until today, the 6-6, 330-pound junior has watched 1-on-1 reps with his helmet on. Tuesday, he actually got in some work. The contact was light, but Smith took three or four reps before sitting out the next drill where the contact intensified. We’ll see how much it means when we talk with Jeremy Pruitt post-practice, but to date, this is the most we’ve seen from Smith through six practices.

A couple other notes on the OL: The tackle group stayed the same, with Jahmir Johnson and Nathan Niehaus working at left and right tackle respectively. Wanya Morris and Marcus Tatum repped behind them.

The unit did a bunch of work focusing on double-teams, with offensive CEO Jim Chaney watching closely and critiquing every rep. Chaney was really harping on “finishing,” dolling out compliments to Jerome Carvin and Ryan Johnson at one point. Jahmir Johnson was scolded about a pair of reps but responded with a vicious block on a scout-teamer that drew Chaney’s praise. At one point during the drill, Chaney kept hollering at “66” (Eric Crosby) to give more effort. Crosby, like Johnson, responded accordingly, and acting as the 3-technique tackle, put Morris straight on his back. Like bad. Chaney was instantly fired up and started hollering, “That’s what I’m talking about!”

Finally, Chris Akporoghene (knee) was out there in full pads but was only observing the OL work.

I didn’t spend any time watching the quarterbacks and receivers today. The running back unit was the same as pre-spring: No Eric Gray, who was still working with Craig Fitzgerald off to the side. Brian Niedermeyer spent much of the two periods with the tight ends focusing on pad level.

Defensively, freshman defensive back Tyus Fields (foot) was out on the field working for the first time all spring. Interestingly, Fields was working with the safeties. The freshman was visibly (and understandably) rusty with some of his footwork, receiving some extra attention from Derrick Ansley. Baylen Buchanan remains limited with an undisclosed injury.

At linebacker, Daniel Bituli and Will Ignont continue to lead the unit. Shanon Reid continues to look good, too. Redshirt freshman JJ Peterson, already rocking two wrist braces and a shoulder brace, complained of a foot injury during one rep. Retention, post-spring break or summer, is always a question at this time of year, and while Bituli and Ignont waltzed through Kevin Sherrer’s drills, freshman Quavaris Crouch was having issues, leading to some sharp coaching from Sherrer.

During the first period, the defensive line was doing the same pass rush drill that drew Pruitt’s ire the final practice before spring break, but Tracy Rocker was very pleased with the work Tuesday. Aubrey Solomon, Latrell Bumphus and Maurice Smith all got shoutouts for their reps.

Lastly, redshirt freshman defensive lineman was still doing conditioning on the side. Knox Catholic defensive lineman and 4-star prospect Tyler Baron was at practice today.

The NFL scouts (as you know) are pretty good at judging talent, regardless of wins/losses. They looked at our entire group and said "hard pass". That's reality.

TN will also need top notch recruiting. Mullen is a great coach but he is suited for a place like UF with ridiculous in state talent

Out of the 25 UF commitments for 2019, 15 are from Florida. Repeated for emphasis: 15 of 25.
He's not getting that at TN.

Side note: If nothing else, having "Hot Take Hank" back, gives us some entertainment during the slow times. [Tip of the hat gif here]

Charger, that’s something I’ve stewed on since Florida hired Mullen. I get what he did at Freaking Mississippi State, we hear enough about that. I wasn’t too worried when they hired him, until I thought about it, good coach but not great at recruiting. Being at Florida, never had to be a ace recruiter, just be the face of the University and of course, good or great coach. They will come. Still don’t think it would have worked here.
