Tennessee Announces Change in Women's Basketball Leadership - University of Tennessee Athletics

Tennessee Director of Athletics Phillip Fulmer announced Wednesday that Lady Vols basketball coach Holly Warlick has been relieved of her duties.

"Holly and I met this afternoon, and I informed her of the decision to change leadership within the program," Fulmer said. "Holly has dedicated most of her adult life to the University of Tennessee and the Lady Vols program. She loves Tennessee, and Tennessee needs to always love her back. She was front and center as this program developed into the model for women's intercollegiate excellence.

"While it certainly stings to make this decision, I am charged with doing what I believe is best for this storied program. It's important to all of us that Lady Vols basketball maintains its status among the elite."

A national search for the next Lady Vols head coach is underway. Assistant coach Dean Lockwood will maintain operational oversight of the program until a coaching hire is made.

Walz is a great candidate and likely our first choice. I trust Gene Healey and his reporting but let’s be honest, when was the last time we got our first choice?

Apparently Walz has used us for a raise before, so while I would have no qualms with him getting the job, I’d like to throw around some other names.

My first two calls would be to Kara Lawson and Becky Hammon. Two brilliant basketball minds. One has an NBA job, the other has turned multiple NBA offers down.

Kellie Harper makes a lot of sense if we’re targeting former Lady’s Vols.

Disagree. We’ve gotten decent play from Bituli at times. Ignont was getting his first real action last year. I don’t expect them to be world beaters, but experience in the system should help them. Expecting the DL to be much better is... interesting lol but so was seeing KC throw in shorts a few times in spring 2018 and expecting him to make any kind of noise for us.

It’s hilarious you keep coming back to KC. Our offense was god awful last year regardless so not sure what the point of that is.

Also does it really matter how much experience a player has if they’re never good. It’s like being excited about Blake bortles being your QB. “He’s played a lot of football and got experience but he’s still the same crappy QB.

Our DL will have a very good edge player in DT returning. Our ILBs don’t have a good player returning. That’s why I’m higher on them.

Yeah, she drew that line in the sand after the UCLA loss. I was surprised she played it that way. I figured UT might word it a little more ambiguously, but at least it's over and we're on to a new chapter.

Perhaps it came down to her buyout versus falling on her proverbial sword?

I could not possibly care less about women's basketball, but I do love me some Coach Fulmer. We've had years of pansies running our AD, compared to Phil who delivers, "While it certainly stings to make this decision, I am charged with doing what I believe is best for this storied program."
Phil got that "I wanna win damnit"

There's no way this was an easy decision for Fulmer. He's absolutely emphatic towards her situation, hell, he and Holy have had similar career paths and tenures at this University...but it had to be done.

Yep. She wanted the buyout. She'd already announced she wanted to keep coaching the LVs, so they couldn't negotiate a "retirement" package or create any sort of admin/fundraising job to transition her out. So off she goes.
More proof she needed to be gone. Couldn't even make an easy decision to live a cush life

Think anybody else gets that reference? Here’s one from when you first started dating...it’s a chicken/egg thing. Stop me when you get confused. We’re going to field a women’s basketball team. We tried it with a loyal assistant handpicked by Coach Summitt. Now the program is losing money. To remedy that you need the best coach available...and that requires market value...i.e MONEY. So we are going to pay somebody “that kind of money” to coach women’s basketball. If it helps, pretend that you had a say in the decision and I swayed you.
I honestly dont care enough to argue with captain obtuse so you get the gold star today.
