Elijah Simmons is spending more time on the track these days.
For the Pearl-Cohn senior and Tennessee football signee, it goes beyond simply preparing to defend his TSSAA Small Class state championships in the shot put and discus.
Simmons has another goal. He's shedding a few more pounds — 10 to be exact — before he moves to Knoxville in June.
Tennessee football coach Jeremy Pruitt has asked the Firebirds' defensive tackle to report in at 325 when he arrives on campus. On Monday, he said he was at 335.
"(Pruitt) wants me to come in ready to perform," said Simmons, who is 6-foot-1. "He said I have the opportunity to start as a freshman."
But first he must shed the last of about 25 pounds.
"I've been ready (to get to school) since I first got the offer," Simmons said. "I've got a little more work to do.
"Right now, I'm doing as much conditioning as I can. Mainly, I'm running."
He runs on the track. He spends time doing agility work with ladder drills and he's run some stairs.
Simmons drew the attention of the Houston Texans' J.J. Watt at the NFL Draft when Simmons was on the stage when the Titans announced their first-round pick.
Watt tweeted, "Can we draft #72 (Simmons) from the Tennessee metro high school team? Kid looks like a beast."
Simmons was the Region 5-3A Defensive MVP this past season. He had 54 tackles and 10 for loss and two sacks for the Firebirds.
In track, he won state titles in the shot put (49-feet-10.5) and discus (146-8) a year ago. Simmons has the third-best shot put (54-3) and the 15th-best discus throw (147-8) in the state this season.
Track is more than something to pass the time.
"Track, I love this," Simmons said. "It's pretty fun. And it keeps me active."
HugsInvol, I haven't been on much lately cause dad has gotten worse and is falling a lot more now. When standing you have to hang on to him until he gets his balance. He is in The Lantern Facilities and it is so depressing when you go in there. They all sit around and sleep most the time and have no clue like my dad who anyone is that comes to visit. Watching your dad slowly dwindle away has to be the hardest thing in the world to do. I will say Hospice is a good thing cause they take so much off of you. They will evaluate your mom and if they feel that she has reached a certain stage they take over the care part. It took a lot off my mom and me. Just busy taking care of both of them right now. I come on and read to kept up just don't have a lot of time to post right now. Praying for your mom and mostly for your dad cause as Hospice told me and my mom, "we see the care person go before the mate who has the disease" so please watch over your dad. GBO!! Love my VN Bros!
