Vol Nation,
I don't normally ask, but I would appreciate any prayers, thoughts, and positive wishes. My wife just left for a 6 month deployment. We have a 4 year old and an 18 month old that are going to miss their mom and I'm going to miss my wife. I'm in the military too so this isn't going to be the easiest 6 months for all of us. I'm just pretty down right now and I'm grateful for any positivity thrown our way.
South Carolina has moved their game up to Thursday due to the Hurricane. Are there other teams considering this?
Hubbs has been talking nonstop about that 3rd down play Hooker makes where he sidesteps the unblocked rusher (WTF Small?) and throws a dart to Fant to pickup the 1st. That was an absolutely clutch play.
Gotta have pockets presents for sure.It was impressive. Avoids that rush with the side step and then runs up a few steps and on the run throws into an incredibly small window with the defender draped all over Fant. Great pocket presents, great throw, and also a great catch by Fant.
I'll watch this forever
i was pretty dejected when they downed it at the 1. but i knew there was enough time...i told my dad that if we got any points on this drive before the half, it'd be crushing to Florida. come out with the 1st possession of the 2nd half and score again, and it's gonna get real hard for them to keep pace.
and the fact that it played out that way was the most important sequence of the ball game, and for me, was the sequence that spoke loudest to me that this team is, in fact, different. i know how the game ended, and we were all on pins and needles....but how we ended the 1st half and started the 2nd.....i was pumped. that was sooooo the opposite of the MO that has been Tennessee football for the past 10+ years. we've wilted so many times in those situations and seen other teams get the 2 for 1 like that against us....it was great to see us be the ones to really apply the pressure to the opponent.
at the end of the day, despite the obvious issues we do have, that we go out each game intent on dictating our game to the opponent is just.....great. that we're successful at it...even better.
we're not gonna win every game we play. but there's not a team we'll play that won't figure out pretty quick that we're a problem..........and if you give us half a chance....we're actually capable of beating you....badly for some opponents.
so we're 4 games in and the UK and LSU games, imo, are the games that decide the, what has already been a successful, season. i'm more hopeful now about the Bama and GA games, but i haven't changed my mind on actually winning either. and if we are able to beat LSU, our floor goes to 9-3 imo, and at that point, it's all about beating the absolute crap out of Kentucky...... if all goes well...we probably roll in to Athens 7-1, probably still well inside the top 10. and we're playing a game for the SEC East. and probably another shot at Bama.
wouldn't that be cool.................................................don't wake me up.

don't forget the i n t a n g i b l e sI will say from a talent standpoint I think Hooker is probably the best we've had since Manning was here.
Bray might have had a stronger arm...Dobbs better legs...but I can't think of another QB with the overall talent on par with Hooker since Peyton was here. And it seems like Joe Milton might be even more naturally gifted!
i think that's part of the story this year....outside of hooker, who also had a couple of slow starts to begin this season making some wonder if they should play milton (lol), there's been a lot of guys that have had to redeem themselves, in the same game. Tillman had a bunch of drops early on, but catches the game winner against Pitt. Flowers muffs a punt leading to points for Pitt, but makes the game saving sack in OT, Fant fumbles inside the redzone on what most assuredly would have been a scoring drive, then makes two HUGE catches later in the game to keep drives going....Keyton has been more or less a no show in games not against sisters of the poor, makes what is likely the highlight play of the year, on one of the biggest drives of the year....and i'm sure there's more i just am forgetting at the moment.Gotta have pockets presents for sure.
And be well spoken
Seriously, Fant may have fumbled but he also had 2 big catches
on your last point about injuries, i tend to agree with you, except to say that the scheduling gods i think did us some big solids. first, we get this bye, and we do need it. need to get a couple guys healthy, and we should avoid the emotional let down that tends to come the week after a game like this....we get LSU at 11 a.m local time....still can't believe that......then after Bama, we get UT Martin, which is almost a bye week before the last 5 games...and we end the season with 3 teams we'll be heavy favorites against.Everyone in our section was like "Welp." when they downed it inside the 5. Then it was like everyone had 3-5 seconds to consider the situation and we all kind of agreed simultaneously that getting any points would be a huge win, and we could do it. Then Hooker went to work.
If we can win the "middle 8", scoring going into and coming out of halftime, we really put the dagger to the opponent's neck.
I'm with you on an LSU win raising the floor to 9-3. The only thing that worries me is injuries piling up as we get further into conference play. But as long as we have Hooker, I think that we can win any game. Even if we're down to bare bones in the secondary or at RB, Hooker won't allow us to lose to SC, MIzzou, or Vandy down the stretch. Especially if a big bowl is on the line (hello Butch, with two giant middle fingers).
Big facts!on your last point about injuries, i tend to agree with you, except to say that the scheduling gods i think did us some big solids. first, we get this bye, and we do need it. need to get a couple guys healthy, and we should avoid the emotional let down that tends to come the week after a game like this....we get LSU at 11 a.m local time....still can't believe that......then after Bama, we get UT Martin, which is almost a bye week before the last 5 games...and we end the season with 3 teams we'll be heavy favorites against.
so unlike 2016, while our schedule isn't easy, we do avoid the extended gauntlet of games, that would usually chew our roster up, quick.
Well, the house is shuttered down here in Sarasota. Wish us Florida Vols well down here. I am not in the flood zone that requires evacuation. About 4 miles east of the water of the Bay. A lot of people are going to be hurting soon. Have the volunteer spirit ready to help if you’re able to. I will be helping my elderly neighbors today. God bless Vols!
