Yes! He is going after character and intelligence just as much as talent. This year they have a lot that recruiting sites have not really evaluated as much. But they like them and are not going to chase after all the 5*s just to dump them. It’s next year’s class that will be the monster class. After seeing what Heupel and staff can do with the group of players he got, I don't even care that much about rankings anymore.
Get me the right people in a respectable top 20 or higher class and let Heupel continue show three stars can be made into five stars.
I get that but there seems to be some truth. Since Saban took over, Alabama has been in top 3 or so every year.
I think he landed the #1 class his first year at Alabama.
Kirby Smart took over and did same thing at Georgia.
You can see the feedback from these posters in this thread: Big Week in SEC Next Week
Granted one is a Georgia fan but they are right that you really need to be in that top 5 range to be elite.

For us, yes. However, I think we will still be chasing Alabama and Georgia hoping for upsets until we start recruiting at their level. I won't lie, though, I would be totally happy with that compared to where we have been.
We could clean house in December once the staff is done with the season. I am probably just being a worry wart because I am listening to fans on other boards (notably Michigan fans who keep talking about recruiting as their excuse for why they cannot compete with Ohio State regularly).
Clemson didn't have to. They won their first title in 2016. In 2013, they were ranked 15th and got guys like Shaq Lawson, Mike Williams, Wayne Gallman, Jayron Kearse, and Makensie Alexander. In 2014, thy were ranked 16th with Deshaun Watson. In 2015, they were ranked 9th with Deon Cain, Mith Hyatt, Christian Wilkins, and Clelin Ferrell. In 2016, they were ranked 11th with Dexter Lawrence, Tavien Feaster, and Isaiah Simmons. One class barely inside the top 10 before winning their title.
Then, they won the title again in 2018. They were ranked 16th in 2017 and finally 7th in 2018.
Recruiting is certainly important, and it has to be top 15ish. But coaching can take top 15 talent and turn it into a top 5 team.
We are an anomaly because of a few things
Dreams really do come true!I'm sure CJH is on other teams' radars. It would be crazy for him not to be with the incredible success he's had at UT. But I have never heard anyone say, "Sure hope Josh doesn't bolt to the NFL." I know he's very happy at UT, his family loves Knoxville and they're not looking to leave. But good offers come to good people.
What those outside the university don't take into account is that UT HCs are a very tight, very loyal group. They genuinely like each other, and the interprogram support is at a level I haven't seen since Fulmer-Bruce-Pat. And now we can fold in a championship baseball program. So I think these marquee HCs-- who've seen what it's like at other schools-- know the value of the support they have at UT and appreciate it. UT leadership has made UT a special place with the support to grow legacy programs. So if they get an offer and UT gives them what they want, I think they would all stay.
We don’t have room for many more commits and they aren’t looking to cut many of the ones we have….. I think we will end up very pleased with this class.Going back to recruiting, what would it take for Tennessee to get a top 5 recruiting classes? Any major 5 stars on the radar for 2023 that may flip because of our success?
Florida and Miami have higher ranked classes on rivals, I wonder if we can try to steal some of their recruits since both are having miserable seasons.
