You know he’s saved some wrinkles for this game
Or maybe is mixing up some new potions right this minute.

Bandwagoners suck. I've bled orange through the good and the bad. And the bad really hurt. But I never once waivered from being a Vol.

I'm a die-hard as well, but we were also routinely one of the best teams in the country while my fandom was forming as a kid in the 90s. Newer generations the last 10-15 years haven't had much reason to become die-hard fans, so I will gladly welcome all the newcomers, so long as they are genuinely in love with the vibe and the excitement surrounding the program, and are not just cynical front runners who want to wear the swag of a trendy team. The guy from my Alabama story is an ABSOLUTE front-running twit. He is not welcome. But these 20 somethings who are getting caught in the excitement and can't remember a time when Tennessee wasn't a laughing stock, I'll give them some grace. They're allowed on the wagon, imo.

It is still a line of scrimmage league –

I don’t know what the hell we did to Alabama’s run game but it may have been a legitimate war crime. They were #1 in the nation in rushing yards per attempt before they faced our defense. Their rush yards per attempt against us ranked #100 in the nation. What we did was more devastating than that because the next week they could only muster 1.07 yards per attempt against Mississippi State. Even after that amazing performance by MSU’s run defense Football Outsiders has the MSU DL ranked #99 against the run. Wait, that’s not all. Alabama’s rushing offense was so good in yards per attempt before they came to Neyland that even with their devastating performances against Tennessee and MSU they are still #1 in the country for rushing yards per attempt on offense.

Maybe they’re still scared and/or dealing with anxiety issues but it could be a case where the good guys hit the bully in the mouth so hard that he’s just run away and don’t want to play no more. Now any normal red-blooded human being might feel some empathy or compassion for the struggles our southern neighbors are enduring but the simple fact is the color of our blood isn’t actually red and I don’t know anyone, especially not the good folks in this thread, that gives a damn about the whole state of Alabama. It is what it is. jmo.

Our offensive line was warned about BJ Ojulari going into Death Valley at LSU. We were doubly warned about Will Anderson when the Crimson Tide rolled into Neyland. With Nolan Smith ruled out at Georgia we’re going to need a new guy to be warned about. I don’t think it’s going to be Jalen Carter. I think Heupel, Golesh, and Hooker may make it a liability for Kirby to have Jalen on the field. Georgia, as was pointed out in the preseason, is very young up front with mostly freshmen and sophomores filling out their rotation. They lost their entire secondary from 2020 to the NFL draft in 2021 so last year their DL carried the entire team. Those guys are gone now. Their secondary this year, mostly back from ’21, was torched by Tennessee more last year than anyone else on their schedule besides Bryce Young and Alabama. Georgia’s pass defense seems to be doing about the same this year as it was last year before they faced Tennessee and Tennessee’s pass offense is light years more formidable this year than last.

As I’ve previous posted with regards to pass rush metrics the EPA for a QBH is 0.41 points and for a sack the EPA is 1.47 points. Based on reported statistics, we lead the conference in terms of pass rush EPA at 7.15 points per game. Georgia is dead last at 2.81 points per game. Alabama is at 5.92 ppg and LSU is at 4.41 ppg.

About our rushing offense, I wrote this on April 5th of this year.

The second thing is related to our inability to run against elite run defenses as I alluded to in one of my previous posts. A few days ago Golesh speaking to the media said that our offense was going to continue to evolve. One of the media guys followed up speaking as though he was bewildered. He asked why would you want to change anything about the offense we had last year. I don’t remember exactly what Alex said but it was probably evasive.

But this is what I’ve heard. We’re adding option elements into our run game. This could be a game changer against elite defenses. jmo.

In 2011 Alabama had what some considered to be the best defense of all time. At the end of the year they were #1 in the nation in run defense, #1 in pass defense, #1 in total defense, and #1 in scoring defense. They were #1 in 3rd down defense and #1 in redzone defense.

That year they hosted the option oriented Georgia Southern offense (still FCS at the time). Georgia Southern rushed 39 times for 302 yards against the Tide (7.74 yards per attempt). Even including the Georgia Southern game Alabama on the year yielded only 2.43 yards per attempt on the ground or 72.15 yards/game.

“Tennessee got in what looked like an I-formation last week on the goal line and our players actually did not know what to do. They had never seen it. Never seen it,” Saban said on his radio show Thursday night.

As with the Alabama game I think it’s highly likely that whoever wins the line of scrimmage wins this game. jmo.

I keep harkening back to the anonymous coach comments from preseason where someone said,

I'm just curious who said it and if they still think our offense is easy to breakdown.

I watched a video last night (and no I don't remember which one it was bc I was so giddy I watched way too much media on our vols) but it was addressing UGA fans claims that they'd be fine because this was the same offense with the same players as last years. One of the guys then proceeded to break down how that wasn't the case at all. Basically, we kept things a lot simpler last year because it was year one in the system. We weren't nearly as balanced --- remember how we struggled against Pitt early on? We still had splash plays but things were much more of a grind than later games. Well, if you'll recall we couldn't run very well that game and it made us more one dimensional and everything became a bit harder. That is the difference between last year's offense and this year's offense.

We are so much better at both running and passing the ball this year that the offense is a lot more complex -- we do far more schematically. We can do more and it is much much harder to slow down. So the guy who thought we were simple wasn't entirely wrong. Last year we were much simpler. Think of last year like a red zone offense - fewer plays that everyone can just run but this year we're running a complete offense.

We have objectively 2 or 3 NFL players on our OL this season. (Carvin & Wright without question, Spraggins, Mays, Crawford, Mincey all could end up being NFL guys too).
We have objectively 2 or 3 NFL players on our defensive front as well (Young and Omari without question, West, Josephs, Simmons, Bailey, Terry all could end up being NFL players as well).

We've gotten better as the season has progressed and done so playing stiffer competition than most any other team. We're also going into this game the healthiest we've been as a team since before Akron. We also gained a ton of confidence against Kentucky, Banks & staff let the DBs play tighter and more man coverage and they stepped up big time to the challenge.

I think we'll see some option, and I think we'll see our defense come out very much ready to put on a show in Athens.
