Recency bias is why this format is a disaster. Nothing objective about picking and choosing which outcomes have merit due to when the games were played. Another thing not mentioned is that we could effectively be punished by simply being in the same division with the #1 team in the country. There’s 5 other teams in the SEC that will not face Georgia in the regular season.
My solution is this:
Return to using a BCS-type format, where each human poll is developed with equal regional representation. In other words, break the country in 6 regions, and each region has 10 representatives for the AP and Coaches polls. To grade record, strength of schedule, strength of record, etc., use a computer-based polling system. Average all 3 and line them up in ascending order. Bracket the top 4—just like what’s done now—and bury this committee BS.
It’s my opinion, but I’ve yet to hear anything that’s more objective.
