Good (but long) post on Reddit. Sound familiar?
“This is a great time to once again look at the Nebraska Yearly Trajectory, where we are currently right on track:
Preseason Kool-Aid -> (You are here) Opening Season Loss -> Turning the Corner -> Apathy & Anger -> Scott Frost fired after 6 games -> End of season speculation as losses mount
Nebraska unfortunately fell flat on its face again and people all over the world pointed and laughed at the Cornhusker’s continued mishaps, partially due to a stretch of ineptitude not typical of a historical successful brand but mostly because the head coach makes it very easy for people to continually mock the team incessantly.
As a result, people—Nebraska fans and others—will have many opinions about the state of Nebraska football, and almost all of them will be wrong. Here is a helpful guide to help you decipher some of these opinions and what they really mean:
• Nebraska will never be good again. This isn’t the 90’s. - A phrase that can be translated as “I only base the success of one team, and one team only off of National Titles victories.” Said both by apathetic Nebraska fans and people who yell at their own coach for “only” winning 8 games in a winning season.
• I hope we lose every game on the schedule. This is unacceptable! - A lie said by angry Nebraska fans only after repeated losses. They will watch every game this season and will be rooting for Nebraska to win even as they currently want the head coach to be fired.
• We beat Northwestern 56-7 last year. This is unacceptable! - *Used by fans who believe that a previous season’s results stay the same going into next season without once putting the mirror on themselves. You will never hear a fan use this same logic when talking about the matchup against Ohio State, for example, after losing to them 52-17 one year.
• We all stick together through all kinds of weather. - *Will aways be said by a fan who was alive before Bob Devaney. It is meant in earnest but it is always tone deaf and only brought up following repeated embarrassments.
• I like X. He should be the interim coach. - Likely a former Husker, but almost always the new, hot shot coaching hire whose sole qualification is that they are not the current head coach; in the 2017 pre-season people said this about Bob Diaco. The popular candidates right now are Mickey Joseph and Mark Whipple.
• The defense got pushed around and looked awful. Fire Erik Chinander! - A phrase that can be translated as “We graduated our entire defensive line last year, we have a new defensive line coach, several incoming transfers, Northwestern has Peter Skoronski on the offensive line, and I’m mad that we somehow weren’t together. I wanted him fired in 2018, I wanted him to be the next head coach in 2021, and now that we lost, I want him gone again.
• Nebraska is cursed - Actually means “poorly run, poorly organized, and we’d rather blame everything else but the people in charge for any shortcomings or failings in the organization.”
• Nebraska shouldn’t be a revolving door of coaches. We need to be patient. - A phrase that can be translated to “We already had several AD’s fire several coaches in a short period of time, yet somehow I have a problem with firing Scott Frost this season.
This collection of anger and hot takes will start to dissipate a little bit more after we face off against North Dakota and Georgia Southern. We will start having more and more people believe that maybe, just maybe, we have a team that can come together and win against an Oklahoma team who will look vulnerable going into the game. Maybe we’ll have turned a corner as a program! We’ll see in the next couple of weeks.”
