Info from another site on our new transfer TE.
UC Davis TE McCallan Castles is listed at 6-5, 235 lbs and went to South Tahoe HS in South Tahoe, CA. He began his college career at Cal before transferring after 2 seasons. He has 1 year of eligibility remaining. He entered the portal today (11/28).

Castles is a multi-time All-Big Sky Conference recipient, along with being named a FCS All-American Sophomore Team in 2021 (Spring). He was named a 2022 Preseason FCS All-American by Hero Sports and Phil Steele. In 28 career games at UC Davis, he put up 69 catches for 928 yards and 9 TDs.

Castles has graded extremely well the past two years on PFF, posting a 72.2 in 2021 (52nd out of 440 qualifying TEs) and a stellar 77.8 in 2022 (21st out of 467 qualifying TEs).

Castles has seen a good deal of interest from the portal since entering, with follows from coaches/staff of FAU, Missouri, Ball State, Miami (OH), Western Kentucky, Central Michigan, Purdue, Fresno State, Marshall, Boston College, Nevada, Georgia State, LSU, SMU, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, Ohio, NC State, USF, Washington and a lot of FCS schools.

Castles is a nimble athlete for his size, with a large catch radius and great hands. He would be the best TE Rutgers has had in a very very long time. Given his west coast roots and our offensive situation, we don't offer much other than playing time. He's gonna be a guy who lands a significant amount of P5 offers.

The use of Fant this year was fantastic.
Khalifa Keith will fit that role to a tee as far as an H-back if he can catch the ball out of the backfield. I think he would be a great change of pace type back as well but he will be a freshman and there is so much to learn, pass protection being one of those at the top of the list.

That last paragraph is pathetic..

Also AP liked this comment on the issue:
Exactly. We have some guys that could be day one starters. Part of their interest in us was probably how fast they can get on the field. If we fill up on transfers they may decide to look elsewhere. Very tricky balance for coaches right now. They have to evaluate if the transfer or the new recruit is more of a priority to them. Lots of tough choices to be made.
