I think it will take a while before you see a difference of the last 4 still playing. But because of only 4 teams with a shot, all the talent will continue to go to about 6 teams. Just look at the amount of talent at AL, GA and OSU. They have to work at it to lose. And how many times have we seen a rematch in the SEC championship? Or the teams from the SEC championship both going to the 4 team playoffs? I prefer the way it was with the bowls where you played someone new. I hate this 4 team playoffs with the same teams.I get that and won't argue against it.
But let's say we had this format in 98. We finally best uf, go undefeated and win the conference.
Were the 1 seed. Florida was still a top 4-5 team with their only loss being against us.
So we'd probably have to play them again?
I just think we're gonna see more uga/bama type rematches. I don't think we're all the sudden gonna see more variety at the top.sure it's good for the 2nd tier to have a chance, I guess.
But it really devalues the importance of those big regular season match ups and conf title games, particularly in the sec and big 10.
I just feel bad for the winners of those big games or conf title games. Won't matter cause you'll have to probably play that team again in the playoff, where it "really matters".I think it will take a while before you see a difference of the last 4 still playing. Eventually AL and GA will not have the outrageous amount of talent they have so there won’t be a guarantee of being smoked. They would be in the top four so you would play another team to begin with. Right now all you have is the almost guarantee of them smoking everyone on the way to the playoffs and no chance for you especially with Tennessee playing both.I mean if you're us, Kentucky, Ole miss, Arkansas, aTm etc...and you happen to finish in the top 12...your reward is to probably get smoked again by bama or uga vs going to the sugar bowl?
Is money grab. It's not "better" for the sport imo.
You lose more than one game and it’ll mean SOMETHING! Stakes get higher and you can’t coast because that trap game costs more. Pining for the good ole days when the good ole boys decided the champs pre-season and worked towards that narrative all year long died for me long ago. Competition has never hurt the game. The playoff expansion...
I'm not against it from the standpoint of exclusion of more teams.
I dont like that you will most certainly see rematches of top programs from the same conference, be it regular season or conf title games. So losing those types of big games simply won't mean anything.
The thing that has always separated college football from every other sport is the value of the regular season.
That changes now.and that sucks.
Yes, I would like to go back to the way it was before they decided we needed to “fix” it. They ruined it. Now it’s almost a guarantee that AL and GA will be in the SEC championship for 4 out of 5 years.I just feel bad for the winners of those big games or conf title games. Won't matter cause you'll have to probably play that team again in the playoff, where it "really matters".
I don't think it's certain to level the recruiting field.Eventually AL and GA will not have the outrageous amount of talent they have so there won’t be a guarantee of being smoked. How many legendary championships get waved off in history with that thinking? Villanova beating Georgetown? NC State over Phi Slamma Jamma? When the Buckeyes beat a supposedly superior Bama team with their third string QB after much debate over them being in the playoffs?I mean if you're us, Kentucky, Ole miss, Arkansas, aTm etc...and you happen to finish in the top 12...your reward is to probably get smoked again by bama or uga vs going to the sugar bowl?

I don't think pining for the good old days. I just don't know that this is good for the sport when the best thing the sport had going relative to other sports is the value placed on the regular season. This format does take away from the regular season because losing that big game doesn't cost you....anything. Losing 2 may not mean much either as long as you can be 12. I realize I'm taking the perspective of the contending programs. I just believe there should be a reward for winning those games, and a penalty for losing. The result should matter as to the outcome for your season. Now it doesn't. If you win..great job...now do it again. You lose...no worries, payoff is around the corner. You lose more than one game and it’ll mean SOMETHING! Stakes get higher and you can’t coast because that trap game costs more. Pining for the good ole days when the good ole boys decided the champs pre-season and worked towards that narrative all year long died for me long ago. Competition has never hurt the game.
Not sure. And not sure that should be considered for football tbh. Football to basketball is apples to broccoli...just too different to draw that correlation imo.How many legendary championships get waved off in history with that thinking? Villanova beating Georgetown? NC State over Phi Slamma Jamma? When the Buckeyes beat a supposedly superior Bama team with their third string QB after much debate over them being in the playoffs?
Yeah, I really don’t know what to think, but my instinct is to be excited. 98 is a good example where it could have hurt us, but think about the other years—97, 01, etc—where it could have benefitted us. Also, I was on the field after that game and I don’t think the playoffs will take away from the regular season as much as we may think. A rivalry is a rivalry and will always be full of passion.I get that and won't argue against it.

Don’t ever buy the hype from talking heads. They chum the waters on purpose and never pay any price for being wrong. If we DO lose to Pitt, yeah, we’ll get hell for it from the very people who talked us up. There will be no self-reflection, no thinking “maybe I shouldn’t drop these takes in Week 1.” They’ll go right along doing what they do.Man, I really hope we win next week! We are getting a lot of run with probably being 3rd best team in the conference and if we stumble the berating will be brutal.
I'm sure it's just BVS on my part but there's a voice deep down telling me not to fall for it, do not expect a victory on the road against a good solid team.
Someone please talk me off the edge..
