Tennessee wrapped up another successful Junior Day on Saturday night. Several guys didn't make it in but there was still a solid amount of talent on campus for the second Junior Day of the Year. To start, I don't see anyone close to announcing a commitment. I still believe March, April, etc. is going to once again be those important months. Here are some of my initial thoughts.
1. Tennessee had a couple of mountains in at offensive tackle today. Ethan Calloway and Kevin Heywood both got to spend plenty of time with the staff on Saturday and seem to like Tennessee a good bit at this stage. Both guys were over 6'7", with plenty of room to add to their frame. Calloway will be back on campus in the morning. It is early for both of these guys, but I think Tennessee is setup to be long-term players in the recruitment of each.
2. Jordan Marshall came away impressed. As far as I could tell, he was the only confirmed running back to make it in. I did not see Daniel Hill or Kevin Riley, so this allowed him plenty of time with the Tennessee staff. He has connected well with Jerry Mack, who has the Vols deep in this one. Marshall is comfortable on Rocky Top, and likes the offensive fit. He does not believe the coaches are just selling him a pitch, as he does see the potential for himself in the offense. He plans to return in the Spring. Don't be surprised to see him cut his list before he starts taking visits again after the dead period.
3. Brauntae Johnson is an early name to know. Tennessee has the attention of plenty of talented receivers right now. But it is clear there is plenty of mutual interest here. Johnson played most everything close to the vest when we talked with him, but I believe Tennessee is setup to be a player in this one coming out of the weekend.
4. Kam Franklin was the headliner of the day. He made it in late, but the good news is that he will be back in tomorrow morning to spend more time with the Tennessee staff. He told me earlier this week that this was an important visit as he wanted to ensure he was a priority. In the few short hours he was on campus this afternoon, he felt that way. He has told me that he isn't rushing a decision and is really set on announcing something later in the process. It feels like Tennessee made a strong impression today. He will get more 1-1 time tomorrow which should only help. It won't be surprising if this recruitment has some twists and turns, but he does plan to return in the Spring. Right now, I would think the Vols earn one of his official visits as well. He has a lot on the schedule for Spring, so things can change, obviously, and this is going to be a long recruitment. But I like what Tennessee has done here over the last month, especially.
