I agree. He makes $5 mill a year. It comes with the territory. He deserves great credit for lifting the program and their big wins. He and the team flunked the test last night. It's OK to say it IMO.

Playing small ball with bad outside shooting for more than half the game with nobody to stop Castleton even inserted in the lineup is not a recipe for success. Even us armchairs knew that before the game began. UF's entire O is dependent on going through and to him.
Fahr Barnes...he stupid coach..stupid coach must go

Said a few days ago this would be the hire. The writing was on the wall.

Everybody has to start somewhere. Heupel, Saban, Smart.... These guys didn't start out where they are. Abeln may work out just fine. Needs to recruit like a badass, tho. JMO.

Hard to worry about Heupel and offensive staff hires. That seems to be his wheelhouse.

In regards to the new TE coach I'm underwhelmed. Although I believe Heupel has built enough equity on the offensive side of the ball for fans to not be so skeptical about his coaching hires and decisions regarding that side of things. Pope was a great promotion and hopefully Abeln is as well.

Seems like he needs "his guys" and that kind of worries me long term. You end up reaching with that eventually

I'm not sure whether it's because we can't attract 3-4 5 stars every year or Barnes doesn't want 3-4 5 stars every year. Personally I like the way he's recruited. I've never thought marching out a new team every year because of all the one-dones would appeal to me. You never really get to know the players. I like it when the core of the team is made up of 3-4 year guys. I loved Chandler and the two before them (can't recall their names, haha) and I certainly don't begrudge them for leaving and getting that cash but I'll remember the grants, the admirals, and the Richardsons, for a long time as I will Vescovi, Plav, ON, JJJ, ZZ, etc..

Both. CRB likes to develop and grow his type of players. He's a relationship guy. Building a team around his core guys and filling in with coachable, high-ceiling short-timers like Chandler is pretty much his comfort level. UT hasn't been able to consistently land the top players-- and some of them aren't willing to do what CRB demands-- so this has been a good foundational strategy.

Guys who buy in to what he wants love playing for him, and most of the players he brings in work hard to earn their spot. Fans love these players-- rootability is very high with the Grants, Admirals, Fulkersons and ZZs. Like you say, they won't be forgotten, and they're the ones who stay connected and come back to campus again and again.

Thoughts of the TE coach hire? Faris from UCLA just not a good interview?

I mean...Jerry Mack and Alex Golesh weren't "his guys" until he hired them.

I think the fact Abeln played for Heupel and Glenn then became a GA and later OA with him is a positive. I can't really name a TE coach honestly...so I don't know who a "splash" hire would have been, seems smarter to hire a guy that's got years of experience with your staff and offense right?

Loyalty is a double-edged sword. We saw what it did to Fulmer. But I'm not really concerned here, ATM. Heupel knows what he wants on offense. That's his wheelhouse. Would a known recruiter have been better? Maybe, but are there really any super recruiters that are TE coaches? Hopefully Abeln does fine as a recruiter.

Now, if there comes a point and time where it looks like a defensive coach needs to be replaced and loyalty keeps Heupel from making a move, then I'll be concerned. But we haven't quite reached that point, yet.
