lol - this is gonna be fun.
We may have “certain people” trying to create a QB controversy so they have something to put on their YouTube channel or write about on their website – OR – maybe Nico after only 7 practices is already proving that he’s worth every cent of the supposed 2 million in NIL he’ll earn this year. I mean I don’t think he’s getting paid to take it easy for a year. Heupel said on the first day of spring camp Nico had to have a sense of urgency and Nico himself said he knew he was being counted on to be ready this year. jmo.
I like the idea of thinking it’s possible for Nico to challenge Joe for the starting job coming out of fall camp. It just means we have 2 QBs ready to play, and one of them was the MVP of the Orange Bowl. Even though he won the MVP award Joe said he did some things wrong in the Orange Bowl and that we could have had more points. That’s good that he could recognize and admit that. Halzle said Joe has another level to get to. It’s at least partly our job to see if we can help him get there. jmo.
I’m not really trying to stoke the kindling (easily ignited materials) of a QB controversy but in looking back at the last 2 games of 2022 with Joe at QB, our offense went 3-20 on 3rd down attempts. So that’s one thing to toss on the fire. lol.
The 1D+TD% performance by our offense was average (vs the prior 11 games of the year) vs Vanderbilt but was below average against Clemson. Our defense outperformed against Vandy, handing them their second shutout of the year with a score of 56-0 on their “home” field. Their only other shutout was in Athens where Georgia blanked them 55-0. Our defense (1D+TD%) was right at our average on the year against Clemson.
One more item on the impending QB controversy, Heupel said in his post scrimmage comments that Joe did some good things, took care of the ball and slid in the pocket – BUT – he suggested the position, like all other positions, was open for competition. I suppose one could interpret Heupel’s comments as a preemptive defense of Joe’s scrimmage performance – if one were so inclined. lol
On the other hand I think Nico had the best offensive line in the scrimmage. I’m guessing he had Campbell and Karic on his left side and probably Parker Ball at center. Joe had JJ and Ollie Lane on his left and Addison at center. Heupel singled out the #1 defense for praise, especially the pass rush, but I don’t think there’s any drop off up front on the defense from the ones to the twos and probably not that much to the threes. Coach G knows what he’s doing. I think the difference may have been in the offensive lines during the scrimmage. I don’t think Campbell and Karic get handed the starting jobs on the left side of our line but I do expect that’s where they’ll likely be by the time we get to Virginia. jmo.
This is what I think the OL probably looked like in the scrimmage:
This is what I think the OL looks like for the season:
I think our best case scenario (for us and for Joe’s NFL draft stock) is for Joe to hold onto the Job as QB1 this season but we can’t afford much of a drop off from Hooker’s performance at the position in 2022. I think most people recognize that Joe has come a long ways but both he and others I think recognize that he still has a ways to go. We’ll have to see how things pan out over the next few months. In any event Nico is still learning. Prior to the scrimmage, Adam Sparks said in watching the two run the offense in practice it was like Joe runs the offense at 90 mph while Nico was at about 50 mph. He thought Nico might be at 70 mph by the end of spring. Nico being ready to play this year is not optional; it’s imperative. jmo.
