Wasn’t a bad strategy back then…. Much harder to make third and longs…. Could quick kick with no return man back if the qb was a decent punter.
I forget the year and if it was against Auburn or Florida, but I remember a Vol QB punting on a long third down in a driving rain and I think the ball was downed inside the five yard line.

I remember watching it and it was infuriating. Our O must of sucked in 1988 to do that once per game. You are basically taking 7 yards off an average punt return whilst giving up yards for a kicker that would typically get a few more yards. If you are playing FP, then you are saying you cannot get like 5-7 yards on 3rd down to get the same result.

Actually…. My memory is not good at all…. Was Andy Kelly one of our punters bc Jeff Francis was our qb in 1988…. Andy didn’t become our qb until sterling Henton was benched the following season.

No way I could remember that. Just 11 times would indicate we had a real punter unless Andy pooched or something.

There was a game in Neyland in the 70's vs Auburn during a driving rainstorm where both teams were punting on first down back and forth hoping the other would fumble and change field position. I'm not sure how many consecutive times it happened, but it was several.

Looks like ex UT Player Clay Stapleton took this idea (not that it was new) as HC to Iowa State (same school Majors was HC at later).
I just read a post where they were complaining on the Cyclones message board from 2009 and dude mentioned Clay Stapleton. They must of punted on 3rd down in 2009 🤣

Sooo I’ve never lived in a neighborhood. We just moved in over the weekend and my neighbors (who apparently are super rich) just gave a carton of eggs! What do normal people give back as gifts or do you?

You accepted the eggs?!?!?!

Well now they’ve got you.

You gotta give em back a chicken. Where the term "which came first the chicken or the egg" came from.
