Practice observations…
- VQ
MIAMI – The Tennessee football team was back at work Tuesday morning at Barry University, as the Vols continue preparations for Clemson in the Capital One Orange Bowl. The game is set for 8 pm eastern time and will be televised on ESPN.
The Volunteers practiced for the second time – on location – in South Florida as temperatures began to rise compared to the mid-50s on Monday. Tuesday was more pleasant after early showers moved out. The sun peaked through the clouds briefly as Tennessee took to the practice field with temperatures in the low-60s.
It was quick and straight to the point for the media who were on-hand for the viewing periods. The 20 minutes, or so, were spent during the final moments of stretching which spanned through a specialty period and to the first period of individual.
The defense went through circuit drills at the top, focusing on getting off the line of scrimmage, securing the tackle and then stripping the football. Some of the drills incorporated a second player to go and scoop or jump on the football. This is a routine way the defense starts each practice session as creating turnovers is always a goal every game.
Got a good look at Texas transfer offensive lineman Andrej Karic today out on the practice field. He’s a good looking guy in pads, maybe taller than I first imagined. I think he’ll shift inside and play guard in this Tennessee offense next season as the staff is still actively looking for another tackle in the transfer portal.
The offensive and defensive line did some group work like normal at the beginning of individual. The time off had to be good for everyone – but specifically the offensive line as some of those guys were beat up by season’s end. All looked fresh and had some excitement out here today while media was present.
The running backs worked inside run with the offensive lineman during the specialty period. Some of the defensive backs not on special teams were catching balls from the juggs machine towards the end of our time out there while receivers were catching tennis balls from assistants on the side.
As far as the injury report – nothing new from a day ago. Doneiko Slaughter, Brandon Turnage, Christian Charles and Wesley Walker all donned red jerseys in the defensive backfield, which signifies no-contact. Receivers Chas Nimrod and Bru McCoy were wearing red jerseys. All the quarterbacks were wearing red jerseys.
One note on QBs, got a good look at Tayven Jacksontoday. He’s obviously till working himself back from a broken collarbone suffered earlier in the season, but he’s been out there in full pads with the rest of the quarterbacks during bowl practices. It wasn’t much but he appeared to not have any limitations while media was out there. Huepel even made note of that last week that if he stays the course, he could have an opportunity to be a ‘go’ for the bowl game – but that’s very questionable at best.
In my opinion, he would be an emergency option potentially as Gaston Moore continues to prep to be the second option. Nonetheless, good to see Jackson progressing as it will be a big spring for him.
Freshman linebacker Kalib Perry was not in pads today as he is getting over an illness. I’d say he is questionable at best for the Orange Bowl.
There appeared to be some really good energy out there today as some upperclassmen were setting the tempo during stretches. Byron Young and Omari Thomas were yelling and getting everyone ‘pumped’ at the start of practice. Heupel has broke it down at midfield both days after stretches, saying for the team to ‘win the day.’ HE goes on today say if you ‘win the day, you win the game.’
One final note, will be interesting to see what the secondary rotation looks like. That entire group has been beat up this season and I’m not sure if some starters are all the way back to 100 percent (such as Trevon Flowers or Brandon Turnage). How limited are some of those guys on Thursday or what will their statuses be? We will see. I’d expect to see some more Wesley Walker at safety regardless.
Tennessee will practice again the next two days (closed to the media). Offensive players, along with Joey Halzle, will meet with the media tomorrow morning and there will be a joint press conference between both head coaches Thursday morning at the media hotel.
