But, since I opened up and starting posting I had a question for the recruiting gurus here. My son is a sophomore and this past season he took over the starting QB job for his high school half way through the season. His team is not very good, a bunch of beach boys playing against some tough squads in Eastern North Carolina, but he settled in and made some plays for his squad. My question is: being from a school that is definitely not a football power how can he get noticed and in front of coaches if he did want to play in college? What steps should we be doing as a sophomore to give him exposure and make sure he is prepared to play at the next level? Any advice or info would be appreciated...
I am including his huddle highlights in case anyone is interested in checking them out.

Try to get to as many camps as you can and play some 7 on 7s in different areas. The next 3 summers would be packed full of doing that, QBs just have to get in front of coaches. So any camp on campus is big, any 7 on 7 that's hosted on campus is also big. Also be proactive, every college in the country has a recruiting office. Take his highlights and make sure they are as up to date as possible, type out a letter and send the highlights (on a DVD if possible) with the letter to each school he's got serious interest in. In the letter he should introduce himself, with some measurables (his height/weight specifically) and some stats (typical stuff you see on Hudl profiles) and then tell him to explain why he's interested in attending the school in question and also have him ask the coaches for feedback on things he could work on that they see in his film.

The letters will obviously need to be written for each school individually, but it's a good way to open up the communication. Don't get discouraged either if you get no feedback and I'd say try to have a mix of schools at every level he's interested (even JuCo). You never know who will see the tape and where they might end up by the time he graduates.

Build a relationship with a QB coach at the G5 level and in 2 years they could be at a P5 job and your son may have made enough of an impression to be someone they wanna bring with. Or could be a JuCo coach that becomes an OC/QB coach at a G5 school and he remembers your kid. So don't think you should ONLY send film to Power 5 schools and only attend camps there.

Ultimately if it's a camp at a school of interest that the actual coaches are hosting then that's the one to go to.

Question for the group - I like video games but don’t watch twitch or streams, is there a guy on the team that streams games? Have a potential opportunity for a guy but need a gamer

@Freak and @Christian Lowe - these guys might know. Or might know someone in the gaming forum who has an idea.

Wow. I'll tell you something. After getting caught up on Leach and reading these stories about Fathers and Sons, I am moved to emotion. I need to get myself together before returning to work. I will say this. At times Dads are forgotten. Much is expected of them without receiving much of the praise. True Dads are critical to a society as witnessed in this thread. It is a huge advantage for a child to have both parents. It is a huge advantage for sons and daughters to have their parents during the complex moments of their adult lives. After you all sharing your stories, I want to commit myself to being a great Dad and not just a good one. I need to make some changes and your stories just inspired me to do so. Lost my Dad when I was 40. My kids were 11. I remember year 1 when I always started calling him only to remember he was gone. The anniversary of his death doesn't make me sad anymore. The days I am struggling with work or at home makes me wish I had him at the other end of the phone. He had a knack for giving me what I needed. Whether it was a kick in the butt or just the calming nature of his voice and arms. I am finding I suppress more as I get older. Need to remember the lessons Valvano spoke to us when riddled with cancer.

"Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think, you should spend some time in thought. And number three is you should have your emotions moved to tears. Could be happiness or joy, but think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special."

Thank you all for moving me to tears today. I needed it. Alrighty then, time to wash my face and get back at it!

I've really tried to be more vulnerable and open to my own son as I've gotten older. I feel like that mask that dad's often wear of being the "rock" is too much burden to bear, not just for me but for my son as well who may one day be a father himself. I want him to know dad messes up, that I make mistakes, that I get upset and emotional too. I'm quick to apologize to him when I raise my voice or when I ignore his feelings. I still punish him when he deserves it, but we often have heart to heart conversations about "why" and we both open up. It's been one of the best things I've done as a father.

I hope when he's older he remembers and appreciates that he got to see his dad was with fault, but the effort to better was always present.

Aeneas DiCosmo? I sure hope we are 4.6s guy outta HS at 6'3" and 230lbs+ he had a pretty good season for them but was playing behind other guys it looks like. I think he'd have 2 years left too.

Edit: the other Stanford LB is just as good too that's in the portal, would take either of them (both are bigger guys as well 6'3" 238 & 6'4" 238)

Honestly, I think I may be wrong on who we talked to, so I don’t know if we have or not, but the one I was thinking was Dumani.

Transfer portal system should be more streamlined.

They should have an early declaration day, followed by a 2-3 week contact window for everyone to do their courting. Then shut it down for a week and have an early commitment day after early signing day. All the portal players ready to start the spring semester sign on that day. That helps schools and players because coaches don't have to weigh the odds a better player enters the portal or a high schooler flips. And helps players so they don't get strung along.

After bowl games there can be another declaration day, then another 2-3 week contact period for new transfers and transfers that didn't sign during the first window. Then make transfer signing day with national signing day in February.

Instead we got this wacky, no-rules, free-for-all where guys declare almost randomly from the first day until next season starts.

Okay, and who have we landed from the portal on defense has shown they are SEC level? Gotta develop and build guys portal shopping every off-season hasn't worked for us.

Beasley leads the team in total tackles and was 2nd behind Young in TFL. If anything I think trying to rotate ILB and play Mitchell/Page more hurt us. Herring played in all 12 games and was tied for 4th on the team in sacks. Perry also played in all 12 games and had 14 total tackles.

Hannah is likely a special teams only guy, but still need those bodies too. I think Herring/Perry getting as much playing time as they did this season will matter next year. I think we'll likely see Beasley/Mitchell starting with Herring and/or Perry in the 2 deep. Ideally though we'd add a 5th guy from the portal that could be a starter.

Just remember it wasn't until his 4th season here that Banks showed us anything close to SEC caliber player.
Shouldn’t that be a knock on the defensive coaches then? We have spent a good numbers on transfers who aren’t SEC level. Those guys need to do a better job evaluating and developing then. We’re going into year three and the linebackers and secondary have been below average. I hope everyone works out but we have no proven linebackers (maybe Beasley) after banks.

Hey ya'll, I'm a long time reader of this board, but I just started posting because I had a cool story bro moment that I had to share with the basketball forum.

Camps.
Go to camps hosted by universities. It'll cost you, but it's the best way to catch their eye. Even if it doesn't get their attention, he'll learn a lot at the camps.

Also, his high-school coach needs to be on the phone with colleges, promoting your son.

I don’t think we’re allowed to talk smack about USCe football until further notice.

Why not...... We lose a game at their place and are still 14 slots higher in the final CFP rankings. If GA cooperates, we have a chance to finish in the top 5. Currently 4 or 5 spots ahead of their recruiting class. Body of work exception applies. Takes a pretty targeted agenda to take that off the table.

I'd have him get hooked up with a 7v7 league that travels around to bigger tournaments in the spring and summers. Virginia Beach is closest. Maybe get him some summer training sessions with recruits in Virginia Beach, Raleigh, and Charlotte. See if you can't get those workouts with other recruits. Send him to university-led summer camps where staffs can evaluate him.

Could even look at getting him into a VB/Norfolk boarding school or something that will get him more exposure if you're serious about it. I live on ESVA and the folks around here send the athletes to Va Beach and boarding schools in the Blue Ridge and NOVA/DC.

Edit to add: I was just down in Currituck last week. And my wife and I vacay'ed in KDH last spring. Nice area.

I don't disagree there, but bringing in portal guys that have no chemistry with the team, no history with the coaches, and no experience with the system isn't going to fix it overnight. It hasn't worked at a lot of schools so it's not just us.

We went 10-2 in year 2 and have tons of room to grow still. I think the defense suffered a lot from injuries in the secondary this season, but that's no excuse for how bad they were against the pass. Banks was clearly our best LB, but he took a step back in production this season as well...some of that wasn't on the staff though. It's not as simple as blame the player or blame the staff. Had more attrition on the defensive side than offensive when we had our exodus after Pruitt too.

Still I like where we're going as a team and I'd like to see continuity with players/staff going forward. 2023 class I think did a better job (so far) at addressing the Secondary concerns and we're adding 3 top 100 DL/Edge guys too.

I guess I'm mostly just saying we went from 7-6 to 10-2 and still got tons of room to grow (especially on defense). The recruiting effort is there so more talent should be present going into camp this year. If any of the incoming talent can contribute immediately we'll be in a great place, and if any of the guys from last year make strides we could be really good. I'm also hoping Banks grows as a defensive play caller...but we shall see.

I am VERY excited to see Perry play more next year...6'4" 220lbs 4.5s guy outta HS... if he can learn the calls with his size/speed you have to believe he can become a good ILB for us.

Have him go to multiple camps of P5 schools. He will have to pay to go. At these camps he will work with P5 staffs, but they will also be attended by staffs of smaller schools. Most kids at camps are not P5 prospects, but it exposes them to multiple staffs. I will pass along his Hudl link to a P5 QC.

My dad passed suddenly in August. Missing the sound of his voice has been one of the hardest things I never even considered I would grieve.

Prayers for all dealing with loss.

Mine passed three years ago. I remember going home from the hospital, parking the car, and completely falling apart for idk how long before I could go inside.

Yeah, it feels like this will be transfer season every year. Us fans are going to have a wish list that varies greatly from the staff’s, and it’s going to drive us crazy watching the other kids in the neighborhood open the gifts we wanted while we end up with socks and sweaters.

But it may turn out we really did need socks and sweaters.

Great way to look at it. And some of today's popular brands were once unknowns that someone believed in, supported and worked hard to grow. The coaches have their own list, believe in who they take, and if they don't, they're not buying. It's always exciting to get those luxury goods, though.

What makes an opinion an agenda?

If we had just smacked a team by laying 60 on em, we would laugh when anyone from their fanbase tried to speak like we were less than. Same goes for this situation. Of course that is simply my opinion.

I feel like certain positions though you want to grow/build your talent more than others.

For me the best "one year deals" worth pursuing are typically WR, RB, DB (CB or Safeties) and sometimes QB. But often the meat & potatoes guys OL, TE, DL, LB I just like having a guy that's in year 2 or 3 and finally it clicks for them and they are on the field showcasing what years in the system and weight room have given them.
