I still don't think people grasp that yards per play and scoring defense is more important than yards per game due to our offense. They look at those total yardage numbers and freak out.If we were #1 he would still be bitching and saying it needs to be better.
The bottom line is...the defense improved...a lot..despite the stupid yardage numbers.
Vols allowed 480 yards in 101 plays to Clemson. 4.7ypp.
We've been allowing 80+ plays and 400+ yards all season. On average, that's not bad on a per play basis and pretty middle-of-the-road nationally. Georgia, one of the best defenses in the country, probably allows between 45-65 plays per game typically. So by default they're going to allow fewer total yards. Cut the # of plays in half at we allow 240 yards.
I got hit pretty hard this season when I defended the defense saying it was statistically one of the best defenses we've had in a while - when it comes to the things that matter.
We forced turnovers. We limited scoring. Especially on a per play basis.
