Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

Posts like this just get my hopes up but I can't really argue with any of your assessments. After 3 straight 5-7 campaigns it's at least time to go bowling again.

I think RB should be a Tie and coming into the season DL should side with 2013. They could be better but it is very unknown.

Besides that spot on.

I tend to agree here, potential is clearly higher on the 2014 side, but still an unknown how it all plays out. Also with ST, any dropoff in FG's and punting I think we gain in coverage. I see ST being much better in that area and hopefully if it's at least serviceable this year in the actual kicking/punting we could come out ahead.

Edit: I anticipate a lot of 4th down attempts once we cross the 50 with manageable distances.

I know the pic was taken mid-workout but Pearson looks stacked for a smaller guy (I say smaller. I mean that compared to Croom and North)

From Dave Lawson's twitter:

My man is stretching out those hip flexors and abductors. Those muscles are my scourge. Their tightness screws my deadlifts and gives me back spasms.

Stretch them bad boys... rip em off the bone!

I am with you. USCe is a winnable game.

I am already down for predicting 7-5 plus a bowl win. This season will be all about Jake IMO. Will our QB play and his play calling be up to SEC standards? If it is the results could be even better. We have excellent weapons at the skill positions. Our D will play another season of bend don't break with some better QB pressure from the DE's, better d-back coverage due to improved speed and a healthy Randolph, and better safety play in particular as the season moves along that will help them set the edge better. I see better kick/punt coverage and returns. Finally, the run game will resemble a true SEC run game for a change.

I will take talented youthful exuberance with insufficient experience over less talented, experienced upper classmen any day of the week at every position other than QB. Let's get the 32 young'uns in the games ASAP for the future of the program.

Coach Jake was very creative last year, but we executed so poorly it didnt matter. We're still washing off the stink of Dooley.

If Jenkins stays healthy and IF Pig is back, I don't see a secondary that can stop our receiving group.

I really don't.

Amazing to think about. I thought our 2012 receiving corps would be the best we would see for a while. It was more experienced, but this one is definitely deeper and arguably more talented.

In short, we reloaded in a year and a half. That's what ultimately gets me optimistic about the long term future of UT football.

Swafford, Foreman, Bynum, O.Williams, and Mixon has really stepped up this spring according to interviews with position coaches via scout

I am glad to hear this, and it bring up a couple of questions...

Butch said that the other defensive recruits coming in will mean more to the defense than the EE's did to the offense...Is this coach speak or does he legitimately believe it?

Butch also said in the SEC telecoference 16 of the 18 coming in were on the defensive side...That would mean Scott and Paulk are offense...where does that leave Vic or did he just mis-speak?

That is good stuff. Those are the kind of players that have to overachieve this season for us to get where we want to be.

The biggest difference is the next 2-3 seasons we could see a hungry and driven WR corp...They are no doubt talented and can stack up against Hunter and CP, but I just don't think the 2012 group wanted it as much as this group will. That will be the difference, imo.

I think he misspoke because Medley is also in there.

I've had a sneaky feeling that Vic Wharton is gonna end up on defense. It seems like he could be effective on either side of the ball. But yeah that's interesting. Not sure if he just kind of estimated that number off the top of his head or what. I think Vic on D has always been at the very least a possibility. Maybe that's why he might have counted him.

He did, yeah. Somebody asked VQ about it later and they said it was an oversight by Jones.

Say you're an NFL GM and you have to take 1 player on team 118 to draft, of any age. Who are you taking? I'm taking Marquez North. In North I see Dez Bryant without the attitude.

Maybe the staff is just trying to send a message to the incoming guys that playing time must be earned. Three weeks until the first arrivals. It's probably going to be a shocker for most of them. We desperately need these incoming guys on defense to step up from day one. jmo.

Based on what they have done thus far? Or potential?

North for the first

Hurd/Malone on the potential side

That is a tough one, because you are going almost fully by future potential vs. actual results....

North would definately be a consideration, but you have to look at Hurd, Malon and Pearson as well. Really and truly you can take your pick of guys on this incoming class with the TE duo and Kelly and Bates. It is hard to say which one of these guys will be better than the other at the end of the day.

They may run wide open all day but will we have a QB who will get them the ball and an OL that will give the QB time.

I think whatever QB we will choose will be serviceable and I think the OL will be better than we think. Last year we had a group on the OL that were very good Pass blockers and not the greatest run blockers...

This year we may have a good run blocking OL and a very inexperienced pass blocking OL...let's just hope we have a good enough run game to take pressure off the QB...

Yeah I agree. But I don't think everything the coaches are doing is about the incoming guys. We're not going to win a ton of games with only freshman all over the field. Some will be ready, some definitely won't be. I think we're gonna get good help from lots of unexpected places this year, from guys like Bynum, Foreman and Swafford. The good thing is that most of these guys will have be playing really good football in order to get on the field. They probably won't be as physically talented as the freshmen, but they must have a clear edge in the mental aspect of the game. There's value there too.

I can't wait to have a stud kicker for 4 years. Such a blessing to have a guy who is not a liability.

Makes in game coaching easier and will single handedly win games.
