Here's something I never thought I'd say... Hurd is more polished in his blocking than in his running which is probably by practice/design right now (as well as our oline issues). He's taking strides every game as a runner and he will improve with every snap he plays but his blocking is above and beyond for even a beastly true frosh. These past few games you can see his vision and feel for the speed of the game is starting to come together as a runner.

Even a lot of legendary RBs aren't great blockers - Hurd is. He is as close to the total package at RB as they come and when he and oline get more experience - OMFG, look out.

He needs to learn to cut back. That is my one knock on him. Lane had some good runs bouncing it out or making a cut that Hurd just isn't seeing yet. I love that he is running north south as that is the better habit to have but running straight into a wall isn't what you want either.

Another play to notice is on the Croom TD play snapped at 15 seconds is that Hurd saves the game for us with his pass block.

The play is designed to roll the pocket to the right. So our whole line moves to the right at the snap. This opens up edge rushers on the left side. And they were coming. But Dobbs is running right. However, S Car has a guy coming off that edge too, and Dobbs is headed for him. But Hurd steps up and blocks him upfield, which allows Dobbs to cut in and underneath the rush, opening him up to be able to keep rolling.

Whew watching it live was nerve-racking. It looked like a sack may be coming, which likely would have ended the game.

If I'm remembering correctly, there was another play earlier in the game where Hurd just destroyed the guy he's blocking. I'm going to have to watch it again to find it.

Hurd has made a lot of progress in just nine games. He gets those last two-to-five yards the great backs always get after contact.

I also noticed when Dobbs runs, it's because he has too. He doesn't start the play with running in mind, (unless its a QB draw) he does it as a last option. Where as other running QB's do it as a first option.

He reminds of a Russell Wilson, he's smart enough to know when to run.

I re-watched the last 5 minutes and the OT earlier today. I noticed that Dobbs was hardly touched with all the running around he did as the game was winding down.

Wilson certainly is intelligent to know when to run, but he also does so with very little contact. This "knack" or ability cannot be overstated.

Worley is fine. Butch agreed to make Justin look better by taking him out due to "injury" rather than saying Dobbs is out playing him. #conspiracy

Hate to do this but I know we're all a family here so if you guys could remember me in your prayers it would mean more to me than you know. Just going through a pretty rough stretch of life I guess you could say & dealing with a lot on my plate..not really sure what to do.

Praying for things to get better for you.
As the saying goes "It is darkest before the light."

One things for sure about team 118 going forward. They are going to be an exciting and fun team.to watch! Dobbs brings an electricity to this offense that makes me feel like we can put up big points on any defense! I know the team really needs the bye week to heal up, but I, for one, can hardly wait for the Kentucky game!

He will get there. His running is a lot like Dobbs' was last year - very good but still raw. Now look at Dobbs this year and his vision and feel for the game have made his runs look a lot more like his HS highlight reel. I expect Hurd will emerge the same way. He's already starting to show improvements in his running - seeing his gaps better and cutting a little bit more. And that spin move was first class! But he's still a true freshman - a beastly one but a true freshman nonetheless. He's going to be amazing as he progresses and he's already elite.

With Dobbs in there helping open up the run game his confidence is growing. He's still overthinking things a bit too much searching for his long run. You could see that when he got caught by the last man and was angry at himself for not breaking the tackle. I like him running angry but I think he may need to relax about the breakaway run and let the long run just happen. We all know it will happen.

IOW, he may be trying too hard to get it.

How much does a practice squad player make?

Google search found this.

They can be paid considerably less than active squad players: The minimum salary from 2008 to 2010 was $5,200 per week (2008-2010) for 17 weeks, or $88,400 per season, in comparison to the NFL minimum rookie salary of $285,000.

I think it's a little more now because of the new CBA.

Assuming they get pretty good health insurance due to injury risk. If so that's not a bad gig.

Unsung play of the game:

First play of overtime for the Vols. 10 yard run by Jalen Hurd off the left side of the line to start us off with a first down. The line blocked well and Hurd was dragging people and wouldn't be denied.

The play allowed us to play conservatively and protect the ball from then on and also put Medley in a position to be successful after missing his first two kicks.

If we don't get those first 10 yards, we might have been looking at a freshman kicking a 40+ yarder with the game on the line.

Not huge. May not have even mattered as Medley may have booted it through anyways. But it made it easier on him and gave the team momentum and put us on a positive trajectory in OT that we never strayed from.

Maxim #4: Protect our kickers, our QB, our lead and our ball game.
