So Gruden needs leverage to get back into the retread hire league. The same one that Jeff Fisher, the epitome of an 8-8 coach, spent decades coaching in? I don't believe that for a second.

He could certainly fall out of bed and be offered an NFL job. The college money though may give him leverage on salary negotiations.

I'm not saying that he's just using UT as leverage for another job (I have no idea what's going on), but I think having his name tied to UT could help him get a better contract with an NFL team if that's what he's after.

Well, time to get ready for this final job interview on the phone. I may not be posting, but I will be watching.

JJ coming back? Does that fit in with the narrative of him being a “me first” locker room cancer or whatever other conclusions were jumped to when he was going pro?

Had he stayed healthy, JJ was definitely going pro. The injury shut that down. He was going to come back for another year of college ball whether here or somewhere else depending on Butch still being the coach. He hates Butch because he was lied to multiple times but Butch is no longer here so that’s resolved. He’s had some off the field stuff to take care of this year as well. Had and still has a lot of growing up and to do in that regard. And it has nothing to do with football more of growing as a man in life.

I’m like Ziti here — I think it depends on your definition of “a big deal.” Clearly it means that people are talking about Gruden, and Hubbs and Larry aren’t ready to completely shut it down as an option. But that’s all it means. They are acknowledging that while also making it clear (based on an objective reading of what they wrote) that they don’t trust the more optimistic stuff they’re hearing. We don’t know who is telling them what, but in my experience, when Hubbs is “speaking Hubbanese” about something he knows/believes is about to happen, he says it differently than what he said yesterday. If he knew it was going to happen, he would have emphasized the “rumor” and subtly downplayed the “but I have no proof of any of that” — yesterday, he did the opposite.

The people telling Hubbs and LWS aren't just random message board trolls. Not just anybody gets to have Hubbs' personal phone number to send him texts. The people telling him it is happening are most likely very well connected and have reason to believe other than message board rumors.
