Hypothetical:

You interview Mullen Friday and he loves it and wants the job. But he wants to announce it Monday so he can get a head start on recruiting, etc

However, you have scoped out Patterson and Peterson who have at least a mild interest in the job and would interview. But they wouldn't want to interview until after championship week.

Do you take Mullen or pass him up for a chance at Patterson or Peterson
I like Mullen but you swing for the fences here. We are already laughing stock of college football apparently by the media response. Go for the huge hire and if you miss then you probably fall back on Taggart if Mullen not there.

Not sure why Petersen would want to wait since they aren't in the PAC 12 championship.

We have got to knock this hire out of the park. Flip the narrative.

The whole “this is a better job that that” (TN vs UF) is irrelevant. It’s all about who your coach is. Was Bama a better job than us in 2000? Hell no. Was Penn State a great job 5 years ago when all the Sandusky stuff dropped no. One hire changes everything for better or worse

I know someone who is friends with Phil Fulmer (Phil takes his grandkids to pool and talks to said friend) and works at Cherokee CC as well as residents near the Club. He's doing some investigative work tomorrow for me :)

This.

Just win and the narrative amazingly changes. All of sudden the media starts noticing all of the positive aspects. Funny how that works.

1. The most valid of your points, but if UT does not vet that to the extreme after everything we've been through, then we are in worse hands than any of us even dreamed.
2. Since Fulmer's last full class, I don't believe we ever finished outside the top 25 in recruiting, this despite all the historic lows and turmoil of that period. So yes, the University does recruit itself to a degree, much more so than Mississippi State.
3. The part about his assistants is a bit uninformed. He has identified and hired a few very good DC's. Geoff Collins was his DC for 4 years, and Manny Diaz has been his DC on 2 separate occasions. Mullen just didn't seem to be able to pony up the cash to keep those guys when bigger programs came calling. His current staff at Mississippi State has more NFL experience than all UT coaches and assistants combined since Kiffin left. As for loyalty, letting Sirmon go after one year and getting Grantham proves that he would pull the trigger if an upgrade on his staff were necessary.
4. At the end of last season, Mullen's winning percentage vs. top 25 teams was exactly the same as James Franklin's. He has one more win than Gus Malzahn over the last 4 years in the same division, despite having only a fraction of the talent.

2. Finishing "just" Top 25 isn't good enough. UT may provide a better floor than MSU, but that's a poor argument. You haven't convinced me that this shouldn't be a concern.
3. Plead relative ignorance about every coaching move he's made. Apparently he's attached at the hip to a poor OL coach though. Concerning.
4. Not worried about how his record matches up with other coaches who aren't candidates for this job.

That's fine. But these guys are looking at which situation is more conducive to immediate success because all of these programs are tired of losing and will have very little patience. I think Tennessee and Florida are similar in this regard but Florida has the better recruiting base. I think UCLA and A&M clearly give a coach the better chance to succeed immediately over Tennessee.

This is what I’ve found in sports talk radio in general. Here in Nashville when we do get sports talk talking about the Vols it is so misinformed. They don’t even try to dig for the facts or use rational analysis.

Most of the shows are like “the view” for men now. I rarely even listen. The funny things is Dawn Davenport seems like she actually wants to talk sports more than the other two in the eve.

Get Mullen. Patterson isn’t coming here TCU built him a statue. Peterson might think about taking the job but I don’t think he would come here. Go ahead and lock up a good coach and let him hit the recruiting trail

As has been the case with most individuals arguing against Mullen, someone brings some facts to the discussion, and the counter is just more opinions.
