For awhile there TN wasn't getting blue chip players hardly at all. Now we are getting a class full of them annually. For most of these players, if they weren't coming to TN, they would have gone to some other top program. Which programs are suffering as a result of our resurgence on the recruiting trail? I mean. There isn't an unlimited number of great players. And we're getting lots of them. Who is getting left out?

So...we have 12 commitments and are in really good shape with at least 10 high-profile guys.

The class we sign in early Feb. is going to look completely different from the class we have right now. Wouldn't be surprised if the average star rating on Rivals approaches 3.8 or 3.9.

I don't see us adding any more 3*s (while also dropping a couple), and we'll add at least 1 or 2 5*s and 7-8 4*s.

Class absolutely has top 10 potential even with it coming in at around 17-18 commitments.

I think you're probably on to something... the rankings are a nice addition though.

Coach Jones definitely knows how to leverage those rankings when talking about the program. Dooley got 4* at the other end of the spectrum closer to 3* without major offers. Hence problems wining games. It's almost that simple.

I still maintain, that if just most of the chips fall the way we want, we finish somewhere between #8 & #11

Agreed, but if Butch starts making top 5 classes a regular occurrence on the Hill, we may see success that's on par with or even better than the 90s. We would basically be equal with Bama and Ohio State, talent wise.

I really don't believe that this is an unrealistic expectation. One of the keys in my mind, from the standpoint of critiquing Butch's abilities as a recruiter, is the quality and quantity of defensive linemen he has already begun to stockpile. If you look back across the history of Tennessee football, recruitment of defensive tackles has, with the exception of the Fulmer era, been problematic. We often have had to manufacture serviceable defensive tackles out of players who did not possess the natural tools to excel at that position. Despite the fact that Butch has not been working from a position of strength thus far, in terms of win-loss records, he has had great success in recruiting elite athletes at those critical positions. I expect that trend to continue, if not escalate, as we approach the caliber of team we have historically come to expect from Tennessee. Butch is extremely savvy in marketing his program to prospective recruits and their families. And there may not be a more social-media savvy head coach in the country. He is leveraging legacy recruits to the hilt and using them as cornerstones to reach out to other recruits in a highly targeted manner.

Time spent at CMU and Cincinnati has forced him to become an extremely shrewd evaluator of talent, which gives him a better than average success ratio for projecting diamond-in-the-rough prospects or ones who have flown beneath the radar screen for whatever reason. And, unlike Lane Kiffin, he does not complain about the fact that Tennessee presents challenges that schools like USC, Florida, Texas, Georgia etc. do not face, because of demographic advantages in the distribution of Division-1 prospects. Instead, Butch Jones is positively relentless in the recruitment process.

They may not be feeling it yet, but I believe that South Carolina most definitely will be one. Spurrier will not be there much longer and the program will decline, the only question is how much. We used to get our fair share of South Carolina boys during the Fulmer era, and I expect Butch to extend his footprint into the Palmetto Stone very soon.

I hadn't seen anyone mention this but how about the swoosh cut into JDobbs' hair!

It's a folical design to leverage the Magnus Effect so when he's skirting past defenders the resulting turbulent wind current causes them to unpredictably careen out of control.

All I want is a crimson rapture. Meaning when we beat Bama all the bandwagon turd fans in Nashville disappear in a puff of smoke.

Already seeing the impact there. Coincidental that South Carolina's best years for winning and recruiting came during our leanest years? Nope.

Also, believe Georgia will see bigger impact than most. Anyone around long enough remembers the days when Georgia put together a nice team, but nothing that would scare us. About time to relive those days.

Finally, all the Carolina and Virginia schools will feel it.

Interesting comment from Callahan (re: Bryce Mathews):

"No, most people see Mathews as a true tackle, and I think Tennessee does, too. For what it's worth, I don't think there's any hesitancy on Mathews. When Brodarious Hamm was still a UT commitment, the Vols were facing a potentially interesting decision on whether to take Mathews, mainly because he probably was going to be deciding before Landon Dickerson and even guys like Jauan Williams.

Dickerson is more of a guard/tackle prospect rather than a true guard or tackle, but he's absolutely one of the top targets on the Vols' board and a no-question take whenever he wants to commit. Sure, Tennessee needs true tackles, but the idea is to get the guys who are at the very top of your board, too.
That said, now that Hamm has parted ways with Tennessee, there's no longer such a logjam and the Vols probably won't be facing a tough decision if Mathews wants to commit."

Sounds to me like we might as well count him a part of this class.
