Considering Kirkland isn't as good as the guy starting next to him, I'd definitely say once in a lifetime or generation is a bit of a stretch, but he is going to be a hell of a player here.

Not to derail further but you would be hard pressed to find a freshman MLB perform better than Kirkland last year.

The guy playing beside him has 2 extra years on him. I love JRM as much as the next guy, but you can tell all you need to know about Kirkland by the look on Thigs face when they ask him about him.

Once in a lifetime is a huge feat. Once in a decade is more like it. I think he will be a 1st round draft pick when it's all said and done.

Al Wilson was pretty freaking special. He set the bar high.

Absolutely but I think of once in a lifetime players as guys who played well at every single level of the sport or changed the game at the position (manning, Brady, Kobe, Jordan etc.) . Al Wilson was once in a generation. Dude was a baller and the key to our defense in 1998. Also I'm not saying Al Wilson wasn't a good NFL player. There is just something different between good and great.

You can still be a great college football player and just be good or average at the next level. Sometimes injuries can derail or just be a good solid NFL player after being great in college.

No whole season of work, good and bad. Sorry it took a freshman a few games to overtake Jumper for the start.

I mean...Are we just overlooking those first few games?

He didn't say that he was perfect. He just said you would be hard pressed to find a better FRESHMAN performance at a position that's responsible for calling the defense. E Berry got burned for two TDs in his first three games. Does that mean he was any less amazing as a true frosh?

Ok, once in a decade type player is fine. Lifetime was excessive. I haven't seen a freshman backer plug the middle like Kirkland since Ray Lewis hit Miami. I don't think he'll be as good as Lewis but if he's 85% we've got an All American on our hands.
