I've never understood this argument as a way of negating what happened.

Turnovers are a vital part of the game; UT forced WKU to turn the ball over and it wasn't close because of it.

I wasn't negating what happened at all. Just putting into perspective what happened, actually.

Their screw-ups and turnovers count as plays also...we outplayed them.

Absolutely they do and we did outplay them. Never said otherwise.

But look at this way. If we turned the ball over 5 times in 6 plays but outgained the other team, I guarantee our fans would be like "That was a fluke - no way we ever turn it over like that again. We'd beat them in a rematch."

I know there's a shred of truth to it, but I'm so sick of that narrative that Tennessee has been some sort of decade long choke extravaganza.

You haven't heard it every year (at least from anyone with sense). GTFO with that.

The line that "we hear it every year, they're back, they're back" is what's total crap. We certainly didn't hear they were back last year as they finished ranked higher than they started. What UT team has started the season ranked in recent years and then underachieved that ranking? I haven't pulled the history but you might have to go back to 2008 to find one.

I suppose some would. Regardless, it was still an early season game that had plenty worshipping at Petrino's altar and ended up a laugher.

(And I realize Austin Peay was the true opener, but lord help, that team was sad.)

And they'd get mocked and derided and plastered with orange glasses references...scales of justice. :loco:

I would think that, except we played similar teams (Utah State; Bowling Green) and were similarly vanilla and beat each by more than 24 points the last two years. And we were less talented/experienced.

I just don't see them moving the ball well, even against our second team. And I don't see them holding down our rushing attack for more than maybe a few minutes in the first quarter. I think even if we are vanilla, we'll pile up 300+ yards rushing and wear them out.

Final point: Butch hasn't taken the gas off too much. He was playing for points with the second team against Northwestern in a blow out bowl game, and did the same against Vandy. In both games, the announcers noticed it and debated whether that was good sportsmanship. I think he does the same this time.

This will be red meat for a rowdy Thursday night crowd.
I see what you're saying, I just think Appalachian St is better than both those teams. It's only the sun belt but they did win 11 games last year. And I think there's a difference in the opening game and the end of the season/bow game. Butch is gonna want to save some wrinkles for Va Techn and SEC play, and at the same time make sure the team has the basics down.

I think that, combined with it being a Thursday night game means we see a slower pace where we steadily extend the lead to 30 by the middle of the 3rd and then the scoring stops until they get a garbage touchdown late in 4th.

Technically, WKU wasn't an opener, but yes, people thought we would have a tough time. Truth is, they did. If they hadn't turned the ball over 5 times in 6 plays, it would've been close. They outgained us 393-382.

"Truth" is we dominated them and didn't need to run O.

Always tough to call out of conference games, when one team is clearly overmatched

You just never can tell what the goals, and mentality of the dominant coach are.

We should have beat North Texas by 100

I couldn't decide whether to post this as a separate thread or in this thread would be more correct. I still may create a separate thread but I'm going to post it here right now.

Tommy Townsend is one example of why I don't have a problem cutting commits who won't play.

A lot of kids would rather start at UCF than not play at UT.
