Coleman still gets burned almost every time he's 1 on 1 (see first play of the game yesterday), but I agree that Jancek putting our #3 corner on their #1 WR with no help over and over was a problem.

Interesting, I don't watch the NFL so I haven't watched him play since he left. I was still shocked when he made a roster and he made me think he was better than he showed here.

A few key aspects I see in the NFL Draft as it relates to Derek Barnett:

1. Perhaps now more than ever, teams are placing very high value on pass rushers. That's why 3 went in the top 10 in the 2016 draft (Bosa, Buckner, Floyd), and 3 in the top 10 for 2015 draft as well (Fowler Jr., L Williams, Beasley). That value helps build Barnett's case, as he is one of the best pass rushers in all of college FB.

2. Teams draft based on need. When projecting what teams may be drafting in the first 10-12 picks of the 2017 draft, you have to look at if they need pass rushers or if they're going to be seeking a franchise QB, a franchise LT, maybe an elite receiver, etc. That's often how you see players climb a board or fall down the board, because there becomes a need for that player at that position.

3. The final thing I'd look at is who is competing with Barnett when it comes to being a 4-3 DE or a 3-4 OLB (I think Barnett could play either, but primarily a 4-3 DE). If you project 3 pass rushers in the top 10, I think you have to include a guy like Myles Garrett (I believe Barnett is a better all-around player, but Garrett is quite good at getting to the QB and just seems to carry more hype). Jonathan Allen has the potential to go in the top 10, but he's more of a 3-4 end. If Tim Williams has a big year at Bama, maybe you could see him sneak in there. Other guys may include Charles Harris (similar build to Barnett), Carl Lawson (media loves him for some reason), & maybe even Da'Shawn Hand (another Bama end). But I think the combination of another productive season and national relevance for the Vols can only help Barnett climb the draft rankings over the next year. GBO.

Other than Garrett, none of the other 7-8 top DE in the next draft are bigger or more athletic than Barnett. Good news for him.

Allen, Neal, Lawson, Harris (3-4 OLB), Hand, Walker, etc

If he has a good combine/pro day, I think he's the 2nd end/edge off the board.

And I've never seen Garrett play the run at all. He actually gets destroyed constantly. And majority of his career sacks come against crap teams.

I also agree with the poster above that mentioned the possibility of a 3-4 OLB for him.

I would actually be very interested to see what he could do standing up in that role.

DB is better than Garrett. People may believe that Garrett has the higher ceiling, but in college, DB has been better and there's no question about it. Garrett also struggles stopping the run while that is a strength of DB

Enjoy every millisecond of your time with him.
All of a sudden my so is 14 and my daughter is 11.

Take off work to see every school event (no matter how silly it seems)
Go to as many practices, and never miss a game or recital.
Work will always be there, those precious moments with your kids are fleeting.

This was a PSA for best parenting thoughts...

Congrats!
:salute:

Best advice I have seen in a very long time. My daughter is almost 12 and I could not agree more.

2016- VT*
2017- GT*
2018- WVU*
2019- ?
2020- ?
2021- Pitt
2022- @Pitt

These are our Power 5 opponents the next 5 or so years. What do you guys think we will do in 2019 and 2020? Will we do a home and home to fill both years? Will it be a big time team or middle of the pack team like we currently have scheduled? Or will we do two more neutral games? If neutral we try to have a marquee game or more in line with VT, WVU,ect?

What would you choose if you had your choice?

I'd love to do a home and home with any of these teams.

FSU (boise St our open years)
Clemson (ND and A&M our open years)
VT (ND and Mich our open years)
WVU (Missouri, NC St and Maryland our open years)
ND (has opening in 2020)
Mich (ND, VT and @Wash our open years)
OSU (TCU and Oregon our open years)
Penn St (open in 2019)
Miami (UF and Michigan St our open years)
Texas (LSU our open years)
UCLA (Open in 2020)
USC (Open in 2020 and has BYU/ND in 2019)
UNC (open in 2020)

unfortunately I think we will likely do something more middle of the road because as you can see most of these teams are already filled up.

When do you all think this gets announced? Usually these are set 3-5 years in future so it is getting close? We are missing the window for any good matchups.

I really liked the it when we played UCLA in the Rose bowl myself. I would like to see UCLA back on the schedule.

Won't quote the dude so those who have him on ignore can rest easy, but D4H - for all the film you apparently watch, you would make for a very poor scout. Now I know you like comparisons, so I'll share a few that I see when I think of the Vols future first-rounder.

Derek Barnett - 6'3", 265lbs. Let's compare him to some guys in the NFL.

Dwight Freeney - 6'1", 268lbs. Someone already compared him to Freeney in this thread a page earlier, and it's a pretty good comparison. Undersized, but athletic, flexible, and relentless. Oh, and btw, drafted ROUND ONE, 11TH OVERALL.

Chris Long - 6'3", 270lbs. Poor guy only got drafted 2ND OVERALL in the 2008 draft. Shame that nobody valued him enough in the draft...

Robert Quinn - 6'4", 264lbs. One of the top pass-rushers in the league. An inch taller than Barnett. ROUND ONE, 14TH OVERALL in 2011 draft.

Vic Beasley - 6'3", 246lbs. You want to talk about undersized, this dude is at least 20lbs lighter than Barnett. Almost exclusively used as a pass rusher. Drafted ROUND ONE, 8th overall in 2015 draft.

Robert Ayers - 6'3", 275lbs. One of those hard-working guys you say no scouts really care for. Great against the run, has seen his sack numbers go up every year, and oh yeah, went in the FIRST ROUND, 18TH OVERALL in the 2009 draft.

Now it's ok, I know you probably don't recognize that last one, since you're the epitome of a fair-weather fan, but Ayers is a VFL that some people like you said years ago that he'd be undersized and not worth a 1st round pick. Well, fact is- someone valued his abilities, much like the other guys listed above, and they were 1st round picks. So you keep ogling these guys that are one or two inches taller than DB. I'll smile next April/May when a team picks up Derek Barnett to be a part of their franchise...in the FIRST ROUND.

Awesome post. Game over.

Feldman really harps on this, that DB has been incredibly productive against top competition. In 16 career SEC games, he has 17 sacks and 27 TFLs. That's unreal.

Only reason people think Garrett is better is potential and ceiling. They look at his physical attributes and get Wowed. Look into the details and barnetts resume is better. There comes a point where you can only use the potential card for so long to where it's time to put up or shut up. This is the yr for Garrett to show he can do it all vs good teams and not just crap. I assume he will with Chavis as DC and he is crazy talented but I still take Barnett all day because he ain't taking no days or plays off

This Florida Callaway crap pisses me off. TN gets lit up over being too fair to both sides and offering due process to each side to state case. Each player suspended immediately.

Florida hides the fact that they are even in trouble for such a thing. Then allows Callaway to practice this fall which tells you they expect clearance before case is heard. They assign a booster as Judge and jury. Victim boycotts and protests. Since her team decides not to attend an unfair hearing Florida clears and deems him not responsible. Now he is eligible to play. How the heck is that not corruption? How does that not get heavy criticism from women organizations and newspapers writers? Clear and blatant disregard for the potential victim. Whether he is innocent or guilty that is worse than anything done at TN
