Sounds like our secondary will be elite. Foreman played decent at the end of the season but that was against bad teams. Gonna need all playmakers back there to win the SEC.

I've been pretty jumpy about Foreman starting due to the early season performance last year. That said, I think Jancek's defense put way too much pressure on the nickel corner by not giving enough help on the slot receiver, even when the other team moved their best player in the slot.

Justin Coleman got burnt repeatedly in that position when he was with UT and then made the NFL so it seems like something was going on. I'll be interested to see if Shoop's defense is any different.

Just saw on 247 Tyron Johnson is being blocked from an SEC transfer. It says 14 schools coaches started following him yesterday. Only SEC to follow him was USCe. He's looking for a wide open passing style offense.

Coleman still gets burned almost every time he's 1 on 1 (see first play of the game yesterday), but I agree that Jancek putting our #3 corner on their #1 WR with no help over and over was a problem.

That's nuts. Foreman is a very good player and will play quite a bit. Shows just how much talent we have back there.

This! I'm beginning to believe coaches are playing games with the players as far as who is being the most impressive! A couple pages back I read a post where Shoop stated Bynum was the third linebacker starter and Bates was pushing him. Pretty sure last week it was Smith and Cortez and maybe one other, but didn't hear much about Bynum and nothing about Bates.

It does appear we have a plethora of talent!! Good problem to have and shows how much Butch has flipped the script since arriving..

That is true. Jancek being a safeties coach at USF tells me all I need to know about the guy. Butch has severely outgrown him and his limitations IMO.

Won't quote the dude so those who have him on ignore can rest easy, but D4H - for all the film you apparently watch, you would make for a very poor scout. Now I know you like comparisons, so I'll share a few that I see when I think of the Vols future first-rounder.

Derek Barnett - 6'3", 265lbs. Let's compare him to some guys in the NFL.

Dwight Freeney - 6'1", 268lbs. Someone already compared him to Freeney in this thread a page earlier, and it's a pretty good comparison. Undersized, but athletic, flexible, and relentless. Oh, and btw, drafted ROUND ONE, 11TH OVERALL.

Chris Long - 6'3", 270lbs. Poor guy only got drafted 2ND OVERALL in the 2008 draft. Shame that nobody valued him enough in the draft...

Robert Quinn - 6'4", 264lbs. One of the top pass-rushers in the league. An inch taller than Barnett. ROUND ONE, 14TH OVERALL in 2011 draft.

Vic Beasley - 6'3", 246lbs. You want to talk about undersized, this dude is at least 20lbs lighter than Barnett. Almost exclusively used as a pass rusher. Drafted ROUND ONE, 8th overall in 2015 draft.

Robert Ayers - 6'3", 275lbs. One of those hard-working guys you say no scouts really care for. Great against the run, has seen his sack numbers go up every year, and oh yeah, went in the FIRST ROUND, 18TH OVERALL in the 2009 draft.

Now it's ok, I know you probably don't recognize that last one, since you're the epitome of a fair-weather fan, but Ayers is a VFL that some people like you said years ago that he'd be undersized and not worth a 1st round pick. Well, fact is- someone valued his abilities, much like the other guys listed above, and they were 1st round picks. So you keep ogling these guys that are one or two inches taller than DB. I'll smile next April/May when a team picks up Derek Barnett to be a part of their franchise...in the FIRST ROUND.

Freeney, Quinn, and Beasley were FREAK athletes. I believe Freeney ran a 4.4 at the combine. Beasley a 4.5. Quinn a 4.6.

If Barnett was that athletic his height and length wouldn't be as much of a concern. But he's not that athletic which makes his size a concern.

Long was in a weak draft. Just look at the names in the top 10. Lots of busts. Teams had some slim pickings that year.

Ayers' draft position is probably the best bet for where Barnett goes. I think 15-25 is a reasonable draft position for him.

Remember I was only making the argument that Barnett is unlikely to go in the top 5-10 picks in the draft as many mock drafts claim. I never said he wouldn't go in the first round. IMO he compares favorably to a guy like Shaq Lawson who was drafted top 20 overall this past year.

I actually agree with all of this

It is literally impossible to predict where guys will go in a draft with an entire season of football to play beforehand. There are so many factors in play that determine where guys get drafted. Heck, things even change dramatically hours before the draft happens, see Laremy Tunsil.

Who here thinks Kentucky beats Florida week 2. I'm leaning towards it.

Eh, I don't see it. Kentucky is still 2012-2013 Vols slow on defense and special teams.

UK has some talent now, but not enough to hang with the Gators for 4 quarters.

Barnett is a versatile lineman that can do everything. He doesn't get outside the first round regardless of how tall he is. A DE that can play run and pass and slide inside has value. His value will only increase after Shoops is done with him.
