Recruiting Forum Football Talk XXVI

While sentimentality will kick in and want someone like a Fulmer or Manning, it would be difficult to turn an entire Athletic Department (not just football) over to someone who has, at best, marginal experience in that field. This is too big for someone to learn on the job and going to require some prior knowledge and experience in running a department.

I agree that UT is strongest when we have people who bleed orange in positions of power. There was talk of making an ambassador-type position for Fulmer. There's a lot of benefit in that. Fulmer could represent UT at events and help with fundraising and recruiting. He has a very loyal following.

I would also love to see us retain Peyton in a consultant capacity. Bama and UF have used consultants to help their offense, especially QBs, and there could be value in a similar arrangement for UT.

UT knows who will be replacing Hart. The plan has been in place for a while.

I hope it is someone that Butch knows. My fear is that Butch starts looking around because his new AD did not hire him.

I certainly questioned Hart on a few things, but you can't deny what he has done. However he did it, football was the main priority, and it's back.

Davis loves UT. I've told this story before. I was standing behind a goal post in the indoor facility watching Jr kick at Specialist Camp. Davis walks out of a door with his son and a guide (son was visiting). They walk up to the mural behind me of the team running through the T. Davis looks at his son and says "there's no greater feeling than that moment. How can anyone visit and see this not commit right on the spot?" He told the guide how much he loves this place.

Blackburn probably is the smart pick but I can't help but want a guy who loves UT.

You don't think Blackburn does?

Lol

So now when Butch decides to go to the NFL, there is nothing in our way for hiring Gruden.

Soon

Hubbs said that the school needs to get someone who Butch would feel comfortable with, because if he has a good season, he will get a lot of offers and would be willing to listen if the new AD isn't a good fit for him.

That said.....

It's Blackburn.

Hubbs said Butch worked with Blackburn on a daily basis before Blackburn went to UTC. So they know each other very well.

Meh. That should be expected for a top-tier football program. You want to win, you got to spend money.

It should be expected but the fact is that it hasn't been the practice at UT. Hart gets credit for that.

In the past the only thing we've been willing to spend big bucks on is facilities.

All of us love UT, I think we need more than that for an AD. Former players turned AD seems like a bad idea unless they went out and showed some business acumen at some point. Love Davis, but I don't see anything on his resume that suggests he'd be good as the CEO of a large company.

Appreciate what Hart has done. He got the AD back on solid footing and stabilized us in a time of craziness in the UT AD. I would call his stint as successful.

Blackburn, Davis would be my first 2 calls. Sounds like Blackburn may be the guy.

I'm sure Butch will be on board with the hire. Butch and the AD are big parts of the puzzle for getting UT back to the top.

Hart did what he was hired to do. A lot of what he did wasn't popular. He did some good things for UT, but he alienated too many people-- more than he should've. I appreciate what Hart accomplished, but I think UT can-- and will-- do better.

I personally think Hart did a great job at TN. United the AD's, made them fiscally sound again, helped get TN football healthy and headed in the right direction, improved facilities, ect.

He had his blunders for sure but overall I give him a B grade for his tenure. Following a solid F by Hamilton he did well to me.

I want one of these 4 as a replacement and I won't accept anyone else!

Peyton Manning
Phillip Fulmer
Charles Davis
David Blackburn

Not a fan of hiring Fulmer- an SEC AD has gone past the point of where a former coach is going to be a very good fit.

Blackburn seems to make the most sense on the surface, but the thing that I can't reconcile is that I've heard some UTC fans grumbling about overspending on capital projects- the same thing that got us into trouble under Hamilton. I'm just going off of hearsay, but a bit of a red flag after the financial disarray we just emerged from. I will say that I realize the SEC in particular is an arms race, and you have to keep up/surpass on facilities, but the way Hamilton did it was almost as crippling as his football hires.

Would love to have Davis or Manning. I hope one of those is realistic- Both have a ton of opportunities elsewhere.

Blackburn has to be the clear cut choice.

UT Grad.

Was in the program for several years.

Has AD experience.

Has working relationship with current staff.

Loves UT (for Butchna being confrontational)

I'm all for hiring former Vols. But let's not forget this isn't just a public speaking position. Let's hire someone who has experience running an athletic department and winning. That person is clearly David Blackburn if you ask me.

His hire makes so much sense that I'm now convinced it won't happen and in fact he probably won't even get a phone call.

Brillo my man. Thanks. You what they say...

"Abscess makes the fart go Honda"

My fart definitely became Honda for you guys.
