Dang, I guess I am just gun shy this year after year after year of expectations that just aren't quite realized. I hardly even am up to giving a prediction. I think instead I am just going to enjoy the play.

If at the end of the year the Vols have made the plays that are possible for them, things should be looking up. Hurd will have punished and with thanks to the O-line, Dobbs will have dropped some balls in along with having some unbelievable runs. Kamara will be crossing into the end zone from all directions. Croom will have some clutch catches. And Preston and Josh will be steady stretching out the big play ratio and well we'll all be talking about Byrd at the end of the season. Is there really enough football ahead of this for this all to come true. OK I have some favorites.

On the D am looking for the pressure up front to show up as ball hawking. Will look for the interior to stuff some teams. And nothing like seeing the ends close out a game when an opposing QB drops back for a final prayer only to be sacked, nay even jarred unloosing the pigskin. I think that having Barnett, Sutton and Reeves-Maybin returning for the season really says it all as to where the defense is in terms of commitment and love having Kelly shoring things up. I think the days of the gimme 4th down conversions are over. If a team will challenge it's going to have to straight up against great talent.

A few back-breaking momentum changing plays from special teams will be expected as well.

I expect it could be a good season. Losing a game is never fun and the Vols will be lining up against the best playing in the SEC. It's gonna take some luck to go 15-0.

This is the only year in a decade where you should have expected anything to materialize into championships. Sure, two or three times since then we should have beaten Florida. But we weren't Atalanta-material. Otherwise I'm not sure what you've expected. I've not expected Atlanta in a loooong time.

C'mon man. Don't tell me you haven't just wanted a few more breaks and a process that somehow just jump-started a bit more quickly. Think of a slow starting car that just takes and extra contact or two to crank. I like where the team is but I am not going to deny it's been a rocky road.

Edit: Where do you get off suggesting how I "should" think about the Vols. Ha.

UT vs. LSU in the SECCG is the matchup I'd love to see. LSU knocked #2 UT out of the NCG in 2001, beat us in the SECCG in 2007 (starting our downslide) and pulled a lucky win out of Dooley's 13-men-on-the-field fiasco in 2010. UT vs. LSU in ATL feels like payback time.

Vols are good, bro! Drink it up.

I don't know why you're patting yourself in the back for predicting 8-4 last year. We were not an 8-4 team in terms of quality.

The folks who said we would go 10-2 were closer to the truth. We were a 10-2 or 11-1 caliber team last year. It took HORRIBLE coaching and defensive breakdowns to get us 4 losses.

I don't know how anyone could say we're a 10-2 caliber team this year. We were 10-2 team last year. We're significantly better this year and have an easier schedule.

When I hear someone predict that we'll go 10-2 this season, I'm hearing we're going 10-2 this year because of BAD COACHING. Because this is not a 10-2 caliber team in terms of talent.

Going 10-2 in 2016 is UNDERACHIEVING.

I know you know everything because you tell us so every single day. You can't look at the season in a vacuum. That 4 game stretch is going to be hell. Attrition will hit us during that stretch. The schedule is not as cake as you think it is,,,,

Exactly what I was thinking. Something to set the universe right again.

LOL..... What expectations were realistic the last 5 years? You sound like the press that says we're favored every year to win the East and we fail. We haven't been pick the east until this year for the last decade.

You one of these guys who thinks we should have won at least 10 games even in the Dooley era? You have any earthly idea just how far we fell? Do you? I do...

Dude, please point out where I suggested my expectations were realistic.

Edit: All you guys playing the lines make it hard for the fanatic, you know.

It's a bit much to say if we don't go undefeated it's a disappointment considering the odds of teams to go undefeated. That assuming no injuries, bad breaks , etc which just isn't being realistic. Can we go undefeated if everything goes right and falls into place? Absolutely. Realistic expectations are 10-2 with SEC championship appearance when building in the likilhood that every team suffers injuries or has some roadblock at some point. Bama Has been loaded for a decade and they don't go undefeated every year and have scares each year. How does this years team respond in the close game is yet to be determined. We aren't going to blow out every team. That is just being way over the top homerish

Deron Irving-Bey

The four-star senior defensive end from Southwestern Classical Academy in Flint, Mich., told 247Sports’ Ahmed Ghafir that he’s planning to take an official visit to Tennessee the weekend of Oct. 15 for its home game against rival Alabama.

“I have one visit set right now. I’m going to Tennessee when they play Alabama on October 15th,” said Irving-Bey, who’s ranked the nation’s No. 299 overall prospect and No. 12 strongside defensive end in the 247Sports Composite for the 2017 class. “Tennessee has been talking to me for a while, and they’ve really turned it around down there.

“(Defensive line) coach (Steve) Stripling and I talk a lot, and he’s telling me that I have a chance to be a part of a dominant line for them. I’m excited to watch them this year because they’re going to be real good.”

Almost perfect. The seeds of UT's decline were sown in the 2001 SECCG. We were headed for our second NCG in 3 years going into that game. The outcome of that game marks a point of intersection in the destinies of our respective programs, with LSU going on to win 2 national championships while UT suffered a slow, but steady decline. It is my deeply religious belief that something in the world broke that day; that the result of the 2001 SECCG (and the rise of Saban) was unintended from a universal standpoint. Concomitantly, it is my belief that this must be rectified in a high stakes SECCG with nothing less than a playoff berth in the wings. It is a debt UT owes the world. We fell short of repayment in 2007 and may the football Gods damn us if it happens again. I will be rooting for LSU all season if only for a sacrificial slaughter at the end. I shall sacrifice the virginity of many women this season to make it so.

What were practice reporters saying about Eric Berry when he came in as a freshman? I see a lot of positive talk about how good Warrior is or could be, I can't imagine what they were saying about Berry.

I like this one. Reminds me of one of our beloved VN'ers.
