McKenzie left with a right arm/shoulder injury in the first half of the Tides 49-10 win, and he did not return. Later, McKenzie joined his teammates on the sideline --- albeit in his Nike-issued Tennessee warmups.
McKenzie was extensively examined on the sideline, before UTs medical personnel escorted him into the locker room at halftime. While it appeared to be an arm or shoulder injury, sources indicated that McKenzie may have suffered a pectoral injury and could be out a substantial amount of time.
Chance Hall, Tennessees starting right tackle in four-straight games, also exited the game in the first half and received medical attention. Hall spent most of the contest with his right leg elevated on the sideline.
Likewise, starting left tackle Brett Kendrick exited with an apparent left-ankle injury, and he did not return. The absence of both forced the Vols to extinguish the planned redshirt for rookie Marcus Tatum, who finished the final two-plus quarters as Tennessees right tackle.
In sum, the Vols had four first- and second-year players on their offensive line for the majority of the game against Alabama.
Defensively, the Vols also were depleted by injuries. They did not have Darrin Kirkland Jr. back after Kirkland practiced and had been full-go earlier in the week. Kirkland tweaked his tender right ankle again in Wednesdays practice, tried to go again later in the week and then was held out of dressing on Saturday as the Vols eyed the back-half of their season after next weeks bye.
Cortez McDowell also was not in the game at linebacker for Tennessee, which missed four linebackers in this contest. McDowell could return Oct. 29 at South Carolina; senior Jalen Reeves-Maybin underwent shoulder surgery late in the week and is not expected to play again for the Vols.
Also in the game, Kendal Vickers had to be helped off the field, and offensive skill players Tyler Byrd and Alvin Kamara also dealt with injury-related setbacks though both players returned to game action after being hampered by ailments.
