We lost to 2 bottom of the barrel SEC teams this season. Hard to argue we are near the top of the SEC with losses to USuCk and Candy in the same season. We are 2-2 vs. Candy under Jones. That's almost a terminal offense in and of itself.
To me, that's the most terrifying thing about losing Butch. LSU fired a coach with a career winning % of 72% and replaced him with a coach with a career winning % of 42%. Hard to get my head around that one.
The last 3 UT coaching hires have been:
Kiffin: 4-16 as a head coach in the NFL and had never been a head coach in college. Went 7-6 in one season at UT and has a 60% winning % as a college head coach.
Dooley: 17-20 as a head coach prior to UT and went 15-21 at UT.
Jones: was 50-27 as a head coach prior to UT. He's 29-21 over his tenure here and 17-8 over the last 2 years.
Are we sure they could get someone better than Jones if they let him go? That's the entire question to me. As disappointing as this year has been if they force Jones out they have to get someone better and I doubt they would.
The season's at Notre Dame, Oregon and Ole Miss are in no way comparable to ours.
Those three were bottom falling out situations where they aren't even bowling.
Ours is much more like LSU and Stanford.
We beat both FL and jawja this year, which makes up for 8-4 record to an extent for me. Vandy really isn't that bad this year, and if we had blown them out I think we would see less fire under Butch. We need Butch under serious pressure to find out how he can really do. Next year we will find out if Butch is the guy for us, since winning the east is definitely doable next year. We'll have a veteran team, and even though we'll have a new QB (and very talented) that historically hasn't been an issue for championship teams. This year was a disappointment no doubt, but it was enthralling until our players started falling out, and if we make some position coach changes and instill a more disciplined mindset I think our floor next year is 8-4. Schedule isn't too bad and we get the bye at a pretty good time.

You take care of the quick twitch, explosive training and I'll do endurance. Seen too many ex college football players in the Army that lacked endurance. I'll make them look like they are hanging roids without them actually taking them.
Or, Washington. Our two programs were compared along side the other several times during the pre-season.
washington did lose their best linebacker. azeem victor. but yeaThey undoubtedly have a better coach. Their coach is also top 4 in all of college football.
They also escaped injuries. When they played the one team that had SEC/BIG talent they were dominated however and will lose to Bama in first round of playoffs much like Michigan State last year.
I hope they lose and Michigan gets Bama in round 1.
What do you guys think was the primary problem with the defense this year? In particular, how do you think Bob Shoop failed to produce his normal kind of results with arguably significantly better talent?
Did Butch interfere?
Did Shoop spend too much time teaching/investing in starters who got injured?
Did Shoop need more freedom to hire his own position coaches?
Any takers on these questions? I personally would like to see Shoop have another season or two to get this ball rolling. There is no way he produces at Vandy and Penn State and suddenly becomes terrible when he comes to Tennessee.
OL, DL, LB, DB, TE, WR (unless Malone leaves), ST.
We'll be inexperienced at QB and RB.
We'll be losing the best and most experienced players at every level of the defense. I'd hardly call whatever that depth chart looks like next year veteran. The most veteran guys will be what, Kirkland Jr. and.....TK?
Offense is a bit more "veteran," but it is also losing its most productive players and biggest leaders by far. It's also full of a lot of players that aren't that great *ahem OL*.
There will be a ton of question marks next year. This year's team was the veteran team. And it gave up 45 points to Vandy.
Who exactly are you referring to besides Barnett?
We played this season without JRM and CS. Played more than half the season without DOB.
