Just now catching up on the thread, but THIS. What a crap story and such lazy reporting. Never take a story seriously that repeatedly quotes "source".

Repeatedly quotes "sources" opinions...nearly all of which were negative. Never quotes documented facts, for example massive quantities of injuries, unless they support the general negativity of the article such as 8-4, or losses to SC and Vandy.

This crap will be yesterdays news tomorrow...

Holy crap...I missed the last 22 pages (@ 50 posts per).

What'd I miss?

A flock of seagulls, and a gas shortage, that's about it.

I read it. Like any piece, there were a couple of flaws- I think more attention could have been paid to sorting out the "source" reporting- but overall, I didn't see anything that screamed unfair. In fact, Haney did acknowledge the positive viewpoint with Hoods quotes. Nowadays, the definition of balanced article is seeking the opposing view by email thirty minutes before deadline.

If Wes Rucker was a source- and no one here knows that- that would be irresponsible.

Also, do yourself a favor and never attribute a headline to the reporter. I would suspect the noise here would be subdued without such an inflammatory headline- which was written by someone else.

I suspect that if you are determined to be uber positive about the program, you will think it's a hit piece. Otherwise I would say that it's an unflattering yet essentially fair piece, if those quotes are what he indeed captured.

i haven't seen Haney deny the headline as though an Editor slapped it on there like you hear sometimes in similar situations. It wouldn't surprise me at all if it was his given that 247 is a pretty small scale outfit.

Regardless, I have no doubt that the sole purpose of the article was Haney aiming for (1) shock value (1a) clicks and (1b) media attention from other outlets to try and boast his own brand now that he has endured a major career setback.

It's probably easy for someone like him to look at a guy like Clay Travis who spews nothing but thoughtful "shock value" media all day long and is making a fortune doing it and think to himself "Man, I want that."

I think everyone should be prepared for similar loosely sourced opinion pieces from him going forward rather than actual reporting/journalism.

I'm fired up over this because it is so blatantly intentional and reflects so poorly on the UT's school of JEM.

A strong AD wouldn't have prevented this article. They don't control the media.

They would have, however, taken an active role to make this article a bit more balanced.

This current admin looked at this article and did nothing to help their own cause. That's on them.

The fact of the matter is the article has as lot of truth in it and if you can't handle that as a fan base then that is what it is.

I am not suggesting there isn't truth in the article. I'm saying that the presentation of the article is horse crap.

A strong AD would help to keep the media in check in general and maybe they would think twice about writing so irresponsibly. Also, he would have better reigns on the program and there wouldn't be loose lips slamming the program for a hit piece like this. And make no mistake that is what it is. It's a hit piece.

It is definitely a hit piece. It is completely disingenuous to call it anything resembling objective.

I apologize SBV. That sounded a lot meaner and snide than I meant for it to. But I can't edit from this phone so it is what it is.

No I get it. Didn't take it in a snide way.

I was one of those screaming for Butch to be fired after Vandy.

I have changed my tune.

Taken time to calm down.

He is still responsible for the the disappointment of this season.

Ultimately why I cling to this article so much is I whole heartedly believe the downfall of this season was Butchs poor decision to change the S&C program.

I feel like for a control freak he actually lost control and allowed the inmates to run the asylum.

He has the chance to fix this and given some of the conversations that I have heard he has had and the changes he might be making I am hoping he fixes this.

I think he can do it I just don't know if he will.

He needs to allow others to do their job.

My biggest fear is that Butch has reached his ceiling. But maybe with the right staff tweaks he can overachieve.

It seems like maybe SBV is not reading the article as merely an unbiased Vol fan. It is probably easier to defend it if you have some sort of connection to the author.

Personally, after reading it I'm embarrassed as an alum for UT's JEM program.

This is true too. Fair point to make.

I don't think the program is in a downward trend... Especially from where we came from 4 short years ago... If anything we've stalled and the only way to go upward again is for butch to make tough hires... By the sounds of it he's working hard to make these hires. So I say give the program time to get out of cruise and get back the upward trend

Fwiw, Haney authored an excellent mini autobiography when he left ESPN that I thought was very touching was routing for him to land on his feet.

I'm hopeful that he learns from the criticism he is taking on this one and doesn't just brush it aside.

Well..that's fair and pretty much how I feel. That article wasn't fair and was not objective in any way. Any true objective analysis of the seasons problems would have went into the injury situation. Everything was magnified because of them. That and the captains comment are two big examples of the negative bias of the article. Tennessee has a lot to offer...Butch Jones or not.

No reporter is going to say they didn't write a headline. You are expecting things that just don't happen.

Its your prerogative to be fired up about it. I caution you though, if you subscribe to the school of thought that it's click bait, then Haney can chalk you up as a victory.

I'm not fired up about it. Its already in print, so nothing to do about it now.

And as someone with that UT JEM degree, I'm not embarrassed in the least.

His offense was 18th in total offense this year. Still pretty dynamic. I think his real value would be the QB coach experience.

With a true freshman QB that didn't start until a few game into season. I really don't understand the concept from some that think offense fell off. Defense fell off not offense. Offense was plenty explosive this past year and the year before with Adams at QB. It was on fire with Mariota. I'm not suprised at this fanbase always someone that Has to be negative. If we hired Peyton some jack wagon would bring up he can't beat Florida

The psychological profile was completely over the top, utterly unqualified and insulting. No walking back from the poison intent of the article.

I feel like a lot of the criticism fails to recognize all the progress. Last year we were close and a couple blown leads led to Jancek's head rollin. Butch got us back to the point where we have these expectations in the 1st place so he deserves credit and a chance to finish the job without all the collateral BS.

That isn't him being a coward.

The sources didn't want to burn their bridges or have this fan base rip them to shreds for just speaking the truth.

They wanted this information out there so that the issues would be fixed.

Do you think that the WSJ or NYT always name their sources. YOu have to protect them sometimes.

Remember Watergate?

Damn. Inadvertently liked this nonsense. They may not have named all sources, but you corroborate/verify with some source who can be quoted. Anyone on this board could be "unnamed college football source". The article is crap. A sharticle - if that's allowed on here.

Fair enough. Go Vols
