From what I am told, the players didn't want to do the workouts and eventually convinced Butch to run him off.

Once that happened the accountability on each player to develop and put in the work was gone.

The players let this trickle from the weight room to the practice field to the playing field.

It showed. Early and often.

Not that you care lol but this i'm with you all the way. It was a feeling I had early on and I think it had to do with the TO's as well as other issues..

You've played football, right?

The players never want to do the workouts but the coaches make them.

They run them. They push them. They make them bleed, puke, and cry.

They never let them make this kind of impact. Or influence staff changes.

I was on a semi pro team once where this happened. The players had the OC run off and afterward the entire team was in shambles.
Again, who let this happen?

Sort of a culmination of thoughts, and the real beef behind that article has a lot to do with it.

Is Tennessee an elite in state recruiting territory? No.

Does Tennessee have "the network" like Alabama, Texas, or Ohio state do? No.

Does the school prioritize athletics like a Florida, USC, LSU, or Clemson? No.

So why do we consider Tennessee a great program? Unmatched loyalty and enthusiasm as a fan base.

Here's what has to go right for Tennessee to be at a championship level year in and year out: elite recruiting (which is hard because there's a lot of neighboring programs that are in more talent rich states)

Excellent school administration supporting Football in order to reap the benefits.

An AD that fights battles for his coaches and puts THEM in a position to win so they can put PLAYERS in position to win.

A coach that puts in the work, passion, and self assessment to succeed and grow.

A UNIFIED fan base that drives things in the RIGHT direction. The Knoxville media sells to the tone of the fan base because that's what generates money. In the good times the coverage is about the incredible program Butch has built. When things are bad apparently you can't find anybody to say anything good.

Right now we're only about 40% there on the "what it takes to make Tennessee great again" scale.

Need a solid off season, strong close to recruiting, some big hires on the staff and freakin get Blackburn in here to shut people like Rucker up.

Which team did you play for?
Mean Machine or The Guards

A big part of the problem is that CBJ has had no supervision all season. He has run the program however he wanted to, with no guidance from a lame duck AD who has no authority and a great deal of resentment toward UT. If UT had hired an AD sooner, like originally planned, things would have played out differently. UTAD has lacked leadership, and it shows. Getting a strong AD on board will help fix a lot of this.

Excellent post

Its real easy to get caught up on the noise that's always in and around the program. But at a place like Tennessee, you've got to have everybody, including the fans, on the same page.

But it's really hard to do that unless you've got some Tennessee boys serving in significant roles in the program. Just a fact - people in this state need somebody they feel they can trust because they grew up with them.

Butch isn't that. Hart isn't that. Cheek wasn't that.

At a minimum, getting Blackburn and either T fair or Johnny Long involved needs to happen. The trust in the program, and therefore the collective support would be through the roof. If butch can figure that out, he'lol retire here. If not, hello coaching search in 2018

The article sums up for me what the hell was going on during game 1. The players didn't look prepared at all from the opening kick. I remember GFW posting when Lawson was let go and it was generally looked at as a positive like the players were very happy with the decision. They probably didn't like his tough coaching and felt like they were entitled to an easier offseason and camp. Jones never should have let players call the shots. As much as I despise Saban, he would have never made such a decision. Connect the dots, think back to the game performances and all the uncharacteristic mistakes. Many players must have thought they could coast through with just their talent.

I think it's less butch going rogue and more he's had to carry a lot of non-football stuff on his shoulders and had to take his hand off the wheel

Try to believe it for just a second and then think about the ups and downs of the season.

It will start to make sense.

I know we don't want to believe it but ....

Wow..just wow. That is..umm...just wow. I mean why though? Those guys earned their rep. Why with everything on the line for themselves and the team would they slack off? Just kids being kids, not knowing what is really best for them? That just...wow. It actually makes sense..how could anybody really blame Butch for trusting their leadership? I would have.

When you have to take on more responsibility (in this case, butch not having a full functioning AD), you have to trust your leadership beneath you.

Maybe butch did and they let him down.

Still on the head coach at the end of the day. He's making the $4 mil. Butch sometimes the cards you're dealt suck.

That's what Chavis is searching for. Needs to make sure everyone knows that it's all Butch's fault.

Oh it wouldn't matter that much.

Jones could hold a presser stating the weight room has been turned into a gymnastics studio and that we are discontinuing the S&C program altogether and some would sop it up with a biscuit and a smile
