Sort of a culmination of thoughts, and the real beef behind that article has a lot to do with it.
Is Tennessee an elite in state recruiting territory? No.
Does Tennessee have "the network" like Alabama, Texas, or Ohio state do? No.
Does the school prioritize athletics like a Florida, USC, LSU, or Clemson? No.
So why do we consider Tennessee a great program? Unmatched loyalty and enthusiasm as a fan base.
Here's what has to go right for Tennessee to be at a championship level year in and year out: elite recruiting (which is hard because there's a lot of neighboring programs that are in more talent rich states)
Excellent school administration supporting Football in order to reap the benefits.
An AD that fights battles for his coaches and puts THEM in a position to win so they can put PLAYERS in position to win.
A coach that puts in the work, passion, and self assessment to succeed and grow.
A UNIFIED fan base that drives things in the RIGHT direction. The Knoxville media sells to the tone of the fan base because that's what generates money. In the good times the coverage is about the incredible program Butch has built. When things are bad apparently you can't find anybody to say anything good.
Right now we're only about 40% there on the "what it takes to make Tennessee great again" scale.
Need a solid off season, strong close to recruiting, some big hires on the staff and freakin get Blackburn in here to shut people like Rucker up.
