I agree. They have to have great goaltending, though. If Rinne doesn't get it together, they're toast.

It's a small sample size of like 8-9 games but Rinne has been atrocious vs Pittsburgh in his career. 3.5 GA per game when playing the Pens. The Preds need him to step up badly.

Great column. So much truth
It was good until he tried to say that we were the sixth best program in the SEC. that's BS. We are number 3 at minimum. Instate talent is on the rise, we have a rich history, passionate fans, and a lot of resources to keep our facilities among the best.

Also not sure if he fixed it but he said Derek Barnett was drafted at 25...

Agreed on your points

It fluctuates. Historically and comprehensively we're probably around 3rd. When Jones took over we were in the SEC basement. Probably finished around 6th last year. I think Jones has us headed in the right direction.

Shhhh. " In the last three years, only Saban (40) has won more games than Jones (25) among SEC coaches."

This isn't a shot at Butch, but the fact that the 2nd most wins in the SEC over the past 3 years is 25 shows me how mediocre the coaching is in the league.

It's Saban, a huuuuge gap, and then everyone else.

I think Tennessee will eventually surpass Louisiana and Alabama in terms of in-state talent and be 4th among conference states behind Florida, Georgia, and Texas.

That's not exclusive to this league.

Saban and then everyone else(except Urban). And that includes khaki pants Jim and Dabo.

The gap between Saban and Meyer isn't wide at all. Khaki Jim and, to an extent, Dabo I agree.

Yeah, I didn't include Urbs because he is the only thing close in my book. Edited my post for clarity.

Saban is ruining this league. Envy is the thief of joy. I'm so sick of Alabama and Nick Saban.:sick::sick:

It wasn't just referring to the SEC. I think the real takeaway from those stats isn't that there's mediocre coaching, but how much parity is out there and how tough it actually is to win in the Power 5. It is foolish to think there are dozens of champion-caliber coaches lining up to come here. The reality is that there are only a handful out there that could definitely do a better job than Jones has to this point, and most of them aren't leaving their respective schools.

It's a little of that along with tough competition. It's also a little misleading because Miles probably would have more if he had completed last season.

That said, some good coaches should consider staying out of the conference because of the competition. Why would you compete in the SEC when you can automatically win a minimum of 9 games in the Big Ten and ACC? It goes both ways.

They will be even with Alabama not surpass it. Birmingham and Mobile are putting out talent like crazy right now.

Barnett was drafted 15, and I don't know who Jalen Heard is. Also, I don't accept the "Tennessee fans should know their place" angle. I don't agree with the idea that we're sixth in this fictitious conference pecking order, and I don't agree with the idea that we should be happy with that even if it's true.

With all of that said, I agree with many of the other points raised in the article. Butch Jones has accomplished a lot. No, we haven't contended for a title under Jones yet. But that doesn't negate everything else he has done well here - and in the same way, his successes don't wave away his struggles. Both sides of the story are equally true and equally important when assessing his performance.

Honestly, when it comes to pecking order in the SEC, I don't think that writer is far off.

I would put Bama, UF, and probably LSU (on the fence) ahead of us and think we are in the same group as Auburn, Georgia, and A&M depending on what criteria you favor (history, fan base, facilities, in state talent, recent success, etc)

I would probably lean toward having us higher than 6, but it's not as crazy as you might think.

Middle TN is booming and Mobile and Birmingham are losing population. Alabama is always going to produce talent but TN is just outpacing it in growth big time.

Aren't we second in the SEC in national championships and sec championships? We're top 10 all time in wins. We are an elite program and we shouldn't forget that. Butch is a good guy and he is trying to get us back and I respect his work but he has a lot to prove. We shouldn't settle for being OK

We are. So if you favor history over the past 100+ years, we would be higher.

If you favor recent success or in state talent we would be below some of those schools.

Yeah I think you've got to tier it somewhat.

Bama and UF at the top. LSU right behind them.

Then that next tier of teams. When you start trying to assign numerical numbers it gets too subjective due to criteria.

Pekka is a hell of a goalie but he's getting older and Saros is supposed to be a really good goaltender. He played really well when given a chance this year. Trade Pekka now or at the end of next year and net 1-2 good players from it and that would be a positive trade for the Preds. I would hate to see Pekka go but I think it would be the best long term move for the Preds.

I'm not a huge hockey guy so my opinion isn't worth much but I've always thought Pekka was solid-good but not great. I felt like the defense made him look better than he is. Not bashing him, just think he is good, not great.

I actually wrote disappoint, and my stoopid autocorrect changed it :) I hate this freakin unbreakable piece of crap windows phone. I still can't edit posts. I'm just to big of a tightwad to go get a new phone. Whatever it is they make these things out of is amazing, that is the only thing good about a Windows phone. I've dropped this thing two to three hundred times in the last two years, and it is still barely nicked up.

It must be made out of the same material they make the airplane black boxes out of.

If everything is right at Tennessee it's definitely a top 5 program in this conference IMO. Everything is in place to compete for championships on a yearly basis and it's not like we haven't in the past, given our rich history. The only thing that separates Alabama and the other top 4 or 5 programs in this conference is Nick Saban.

If you drop it once from 200-300 feet, I bet you get a different outcome :)

Hope folks got to hear the Ainge interview of Martinez this morning. Home run. Kudos to Butch and staff. Martinez is way beyond his years in maturity. The two of them QB talked about routes/passing scheme and Ainge was blown away. Laser timed 4.7/40 last year. If he stays healthy he's going to be really special. He had great things to say about the staff and Canales in particular. Best interview of a HS player I have heard in years.

Better than Butlers interview?
