I have never been impressed with the D-Line play under Butch Jones. Having #9 helped out immensely and having #50 on the other side helped too. However, it just seems like our defensive line has a hard time actually tackling people in the backfield.
2014 stands out as the most impressive year for our DL under Butch to me. They got a lot of production out of Jordan Williams, Danny O'Brien, and Owen Williams at DT that year. Mixon played a bit there in spots, but they basically got by all year with 3 DTs (one and out of shape JUCO transfer and one a converted DE).
I'm hoping some of our interior guys can take the next step in 2017.
O'Brien was starting to look great last year. It's a shame what happened to himOwen Williams was a Godsend for when he played here. Always felt he was a very underappreciated player here. Not by all, but by most. Danny O...while I don't think he might have produced as much as people wanted...was a very solid D-lineman for us. I think it showed when he was no longer there too.
I actually, already posted in that one. Impressive feat(with their feet), by the UT alums
Farewell my fellow VN'ers. I've been drinking since about 12:00, but it is now time for me to get serious about it. Wife and kids are out of town and the city is yet unsoiled by me for the night.
:hi:

I agree we shouldn't take too much from the spring game.
As for the latter part, I'm not so sure our coaching staff will be thinking 1-2 years ahead (or even a half season ahead, really) in regards to the QB battle. They'll go with the guy who they can count on to not make mistakes and get them early wins and/or to 8 wins safely right now over the higher ceiling guy who might struggle initially, IMO.
I don't think Butch has enough equity to take a chance with the QB battle. If we were coming off a trip to Atlanta or a 10-12 win season, I'd think there'd be a lot of motivation for him to maybe go with Guarantano in 2017 with an eye towards making a run in 2018. As things stand, there's just not much motivation to not take the safe route with the guy they're most comfortable with.
Especially if Shoop gets the defense right and the offense doesn't have to put the team on its back like in 2016, I'm kind of expecting to see a team that plays things a bit more safely and aimed to win games by avoiding turnovers and winning the field position battle in 2017. If that's what the coaches have in mind, Dormady is likely the safe bet for at least the early part of 2017. Maybe not necessarily our best bet long term. But I don't think Butch can afford to think too far ahead right now.
Of course, all speculation on my part.
