Good point.

They did well (great) on offense, marginal on defense and poor on special teams.

We did great on special teams, did well on offense and very poor on defense but it for us a win.

Obviously I have been very negative on the D but why is everyone so quick to say let's wait and see how the unit plays against traditional offenses but in the same vein writing off Martin?

Playing CB against GT isn't easy as they thrive on making CBs look bad with big plays.

I was specifically referring to the "doesn't take a backseat to anybody" part. Elite or not, there are others in the top 10 that we routinely take a backseat to, regardless of how much we complain and insist otherwise. I'm not saying I like it or am satisfied with it, just that it is what it is.

Every year is different. We are an elite program and should have the mentality that we're not backseat riders. There will be years where we ultimately take the back seat. The only way to eliminate that is to win the title every single year.

Balance. When you think you're a 10 and aren't, and insist only on dating 10s, you're probably not dating much. We have created this mythical level of expected awesomeness in our minds, such that anything short of championships is failure. It simply isn't that good, and hasn't been for the majority of our history. If we had a more balanced view of who our program has been historically, we might be a little quicker to be thankful of where the program is right now...warts and all.

Always aspire to greatness, but it's ok to be grateful that we aren't where we were a few short years ago.

Probably because Martin was embarrassed on traditional plays that every team runs.

8 yard hooks turned into 40 yd gains because he gave too much cushion and missed a tackle by about 4 feet.

Championships should always be the goal and considered the ultimate success. You can achieve other goals without winning a championship.

You should avoid lowering your expectations below where they should be - always.

I do not think we are a top 10 program, historical performance displays this as fact. We are, in fact, an elite, top 10 program and should expect the most elite things at all levels of the program. We may not always achieve those things, but they should always be realistic goals. If they are not realistic goals, then something is wrong and needs to be changed.
