Can you step back and look at from the perspective of a person of faith? We believe mightily in the power of prayer and the healing that can come from it. You don't care for it, but many do. I would never send platitudes your way because I would not want to insult you. Could you not return the favor and just let others be as well?

I know for most people this will sound really strange but several years ago I was out of state on a project and had a relative here in Tennessee get in very bad way medically. Surgery was being planned for the following week. I prayed, in the spirit, and when I had finished praying, I already knew she was going to be okay. To me that was to most memorable part of that episode. I already knew God answered the prayer. I've never told anyone about that before, not a single soul. Anyway, the next week she calls me to tell me the doctors says she doesn't need surgery after all and that she's going to be just fine. Of course I had already known that but I didn't let on; I just kinda feigned surprise and celebrated with her.

People can believe or not believe. I don't think it works if you don't believe. jmo.

I stopped offering prayer unless I can rock the PRT (prayer right there).

Nothing like the shame of saying you will pray and then never getting around to it. “Man, how much do I suck?” 😂

I think of prayer is open communication with God. So when I say I am praying for someone, I include in my sentence or paragraph the specific things I'm praying about. I think in those moments God is listening right then and there and it's what my heart and soul is truly feeling. I will usually follow up with additional prayer later. But, even if I forget, I know that I have offered up legitimate prayer.

I understand the power prayer has for many people. Saying "thoughts and prayers" though is not praying for someone. It's the lowest common denominator you can type out to say "look at me being all sympathetic!" Like someone mentioned earlier, simply saying "I'm praying for you or I will pray for you in your time of loss, etc" means so much more because you actually are saying you are going to do something and you took a little more time to directly address the person suffering. I am not condemning prayer or that people should not lift people up, just don't throw out a tired phrase and think that it feels or seems authentic. Do you understand my point?
Yes I do. Your testosterone levels have to be lower than your ballsack these days. Sorry to interrupt...back to life rules for everybody else.

I get this. I don't ever simply say, "thoughts and prayers" - that seems like a canned response like signing off an email with Best Regards....

I will say, "I will pray for you and your family" or something along those lines.

And if i say that, i like to do it right then and there - if i am in my car, or i will find an office or quite space at work - i don't chalk it up until later because i will forget.

People that don't believe in God will search for answers when something happens that cannot be explained. Sometimes it will lead them to God, if they are the least bit open to Him. Others will just eventually chalk it up to welcomed coincidence and never acknowledge His intervention on their behalf. He doesn't love a non-believer less than a believer, it's just that the believer can more readily see Him working in their lives.

When I tell someone I will include them in my prayers, I try to stop and pray for then immediately, because I’m not telling them that to be patted on the back and seen. I genuinely care and want to pray for whatever their situation is. If for some reason I forget, I always try to include in my prayer at some point that day or night for God to help with those I said I would pray for, if I haven’t already prayed specifically for them, because God knows each and every one of them I said I would pray for. Good thoughts though, newt. I think there are those who do it to be seen, but they have to answer to God for that some day...it’s not for me to judge whether they mean it or not.

Agreed. It doesn't take much time to just stop and say a quick prayer. God knows what the person needs more than we ever could so just lifting that person up to Him in a quick prayer is the least I can do.

To be fair, to suggest it's only said for personal attention would require knowing everyone's intentions. Not possible.
That's fair but when you scroll through a timeline and everyone says the exact same phrase it sure seems trite. That's all I'm saying. It's something you can count on after every tragedy, that and #citystrong which is also cringe worthy.

Newts point is most people throwing t and ps out are meaningless. As in the person doing the teeing and peeing doesn't actually GAF. Usually just saying it for clout.
Why don’t you two teach us a course on proselytizing whilst totally not drawing attention to yourselves?

Must suck dealing with mere humans and their insufferable chants.

I think I could make a case from the Bible for never posting publicly that you are praying about something. That's probably different than asking for people to pray...

Yep. Matthew 6:5-8

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him."

@bignewt is much older than me. He's the poster child for "Get off my lawn!"

Just TikTok it for all the short attention spans and we'll all understand.

Speaking of TikTok, there is a dog on social media named Tatum. His dad does his voice and I absolutely love that dog. His videos are very funny.
