Almost. She said if you don't trust that they won't take your property, life, liberty at some point through force. But I digress.
Regardless, she then concludes the gun debate is over. She is setting the argument up as ONLY being about owning guns or not, ie we need guns to protect us from the government taking things by force.
I would agree IF this was the actual, genuine gun debate.
The gun debate is over who can get them (mental, criminals, etc), the controls in place, and type of weapons.
Her false dichotomy is disingenuous. Some can agree with the possibility of a forceful government, while still wanting reasonable measures in place for anomalous circumstances and people.
Great if you aren't interested in talking about the nuances. The rest of us are.
Her whole strawman argument disingenuously dismisses all the arguments in-between. Again, someone can believe the government is capable of taking property, liberty ,etc by force....and still want to debate modern gun control issues.Well, she said the debate is over if....and based on the 'if' she was right.
I'm all ears. What is the real gun debate?
Getting past the fact that is not the gun debate to most ardent anti-gun people, criminals already can't legally purchase weapons. Remember, the Democrat candidate for president has already said if elected he will come for the 'assault weapons'. But I have said before I am all for keeping weapons out of the hands of individuals with severe mental issues, but how do you go about that on a national scale and who decides who meets the criteria of being too mental?
You say you only want reasonable measures and I can respect that, but so far I have not really seen any "reasonable measures" put forward; all I have seen are measures designed to put unnecessary restrictions on responsible gunowners, none of which will prevent criminals from being criminals. And then of course, as I already noted, I saw the actual threats from the Dem presidential candidate to come for the AR-15s. So no, that is certainly not a 'reasonable' measure. And there is the problem. It is going to be really difficult to get responsible gunowners to take anyone's claims such as yourself of only wanting reasonable measures when we have already seen presidential candidates openly tell us they will come for our guns.
Define "the rest of us."

She says all are one or the other...a sad device to trick people.
This gun control issue really hit home for me today. First, I support the right to own a gun... many different types, in fact.
But they need to be less accessible and require strict background checks, drug tests, thorough psych evals and even character references....for all levels of firearms.
My good friend (best man at my wedding) just had his brother killed(also my buddy) in Pensacola. My buddy had moved in with a guy who he had known several years. The guy had some psychological issues... mostly bi-polar and liked to get drunk, fire off his gun for fun and would get belligerent and argue when drinking. Never had been too much of a problem before.
My buddy and the guy argued and my buddy decided to pack a bag and leave and planned to come back and get his furniture the next day. This pscho f*** went to his room, got his gun and shot my buddy in the neck and back as he was walking out the front door.
My buddy just turned 32, had a close girlfriend who has a daghter and was a genuinely nice guy if a little immature at times. He drank and smoked a little but didn't start problems with people. Please pray for his family to heal their loss.
If mental evals were a bigger part of gun ownership maybe this senseless death could have been prevented. So heartbroken for their whole family and disgusted with the P.O.S who did this senselessly. People with documented drug, alcohol and/or psychological problems shouldn't have the right to dangerous weapons.
Gun proponents will say that the guy could have used a knife or other weapon but my friend would have at least had a fighting chance and probably would have had less serious injuries.
You will be missed, Dillon. You didn't deserve to have your life cut short and have your family's lives forever changed.
